That's quite a collection. Mix and match offers your potential buyers more flexibility. But if this mean disassembling complete/integrated steam plants maybe keep those intact.  Telling the sizes of the boilers would be useful information, even now.  Lots of work for you in any case. It will be interesting, and thanks for the heads up.

Hi Jim,

All the boilers and engines you mention are good quality items so they should bring in a fair price. Of course much depends on the condition they are in.
That being said, the steam engine market, especially for out of production items, can be erratic, since there is no constant supply and the knowledgeable buyers are also rather few. The same model can sell for widely different prices.
As an example, a Proteus engine without pump and boiler sold recently for 268 Euro:

As for the best place to sell, in my experience ebay is better than forums due to a much wider audience. Of course selling on ebay incurs additional costs while forum sales do not, so offering first on forums makes sense. Then move everything that didn't sell after a reasonable time to ebay.

Hi Jim that’s a lovely collection. Its probably better to list each item separately, a buyer can always make offers on more than one item. The approach offered by KNO3 makes sense. Our thoughts are with your friends family as you help them through this difficult time.

Well - That's an interesting take on it.
Talking about a subject on multiple sites is banned?
Well, it is your board - and I value the people I have met here so I will accept this "ruling".
I was just doing what I said - conducting market research for the family
that lost their father to see the best way to market the collection.

Looks like the overall opinion is to market them separately.
Since I have gotten a number of PM's from your side of the pond, I
will spend some time on the shipping details before opening the sale.

Regards to all.

Sorry, maybe we're being over cautious but we've had sales / valuation / survey issue before and it's caused hassle that no one needs.....   {:-{
