Raboesch propeller issues. Incorrect packaging
« on: August 22, 2020, 02:40:59 pm »

Some people are aware of this but not really too well known.

Originally Raboesch identified left and right rotation different to the rest of us  {-)

Apparently they rectified this
see here .. http://www.raboeschmodels.com/index.php/en/?fbclid=IwAR1c7hKC7jXVxMc3EQWVk4HHOYaQ4ZH5mlfqwTDCNCucnaYbJFgq1ETEjYg

Good you might think  :-))   actually no because all too often they are putting the wrong prop in the new packaging or it is old pre change stock?

This causes grief for the customer as well as the retailer/etailer.
Example below. Be sure to ask your supplier to check the contents against the link above

Hmm, I twice recently had an issue with a different shop doing this to me with a plastic propeller. I emailed them the first time, no response. Re-ordered with a note on the order specifically asking them to double check and I sent them an email also. Same wrong prop came again (with my note asking them to check printed on the bottom of the packing slip).  I wasn't so worried as it was only a £3.50 propeller, but won't buy props from that seller again and not going to try for another one as it's not worth spending a tenner for a plastic prop now.  I'll just wait until I see a suitable brass one, or find a plastic one off the shelf somewhere.

I've had the same problem with some retailers of plastic props. Some of them don't seem to know left from right. They seem to just send what they feel like.

And that is some well known names.

Is it not the case that US convention on prop rotation is opposite to the European one?  Or has that been sorted these days?  If it is still the case that opposite sides of the Atlantic view rotation differently, suppliers will always be caught on the horns of a dilemma, given that the US is probably the largest market, even for European suppliers.

(And in thread hi-jack mode, relating to twin screws, what does "outward turning" mean?  Whichever way a prop turns, one blade will be turning outwards while the opposite one turns inwards. People need to specify whether they mean the upper or lower blade, which they never do.  {:-{ )

The point is regardless of convention the link in post one shows the intention of Raboesch and the picture of my prop as supplied is the opposite to that.
The packet indicates a right turning prop or starboard but the contents is a left turning or port prop

You could by the same issue end up with 2 RH or 2 LH  {-)
They are not ALL wrong

Slightly OT but I notice also that most places I look at are out of right handed props at the moment RH on the listings anyway!). Maybe due to co-vid shut downs catching up on us?  I've tried to order a few over last couple of weeks and most places seem out of stock at the moment?

Wrong Stan. It's not the sellers but Raboesch's packaging.
No outlet better than Cornwall Model Boats and they had no idea this was happening. Glenn will now check over 200 props in their stock.

From Nick (raflaunches) I understand that Ron Dean also knows of this issue

Hi wires crossed all of my props come from P/S. You have raised a very good point. In terms of CMB  never had any problems using them.

To be fair most shop staff would not have a clue whether a boat prop was left or right handed just by looking at it. They rely on the packing description.
Try it out next time you visit Leeds model shop  {-)  that could be fun

Yes it’s a real pain in the proverbial backside not only for the customer but also for the retailers. I was after a prop in February and asked for the appropriate one and Ron spent the next few minutes checking each of the props to make sure that it was the correct one! It didn’t help the situation that Raboesch just swapped the packaging over to suit their different labelling of LH and RH but didn’t inform the retailers so they just stocked up as usual and put them in with their remaining stock. This means that retailers can’t trust the packaging in their own stock until they have ensured that all old stock are gone or re-labelled with the correct information. This could take awhile for them to correct their stock information.

Hi! The other problem we have is there are 20 years of Raboeasch catalogues out there with the old opposite hand props in them, that is about 8000 + of the, plus all instruction books printed before they changed the way they "handed" the props, so we get lots of order for props, unless we know where they got the codes from ? which books and which year, we get grief because they are sent a prop the opposite hand, plus as you can see in the thread, they often get it wrong labels as well ?
Regards, Ron

Nobody seems to have mentioned good practice here.

It can be assumed for practical purposes that most electric motors perform equally well in either direction. They can be reversed by simply switching over the power leads whether brushed or brushless.

On a single screw boat the prop will normally screw on the shaft in a clockwise direction as seen from astern. So when going ahead, which the boat spends most of its time doing, the prop should turn in a similar clockwise direction which will tend to keep it tightened on the shaft.

It is obviously stilll advisable to include a locknut though for when going astern!

The pressure on a clockwise turning prop will be anti clockwise thus the water resistance is trying to unscrew it.
Most people want a clockwise prop for single install because google dictates that docking manoeuvres are easier than with anti-clockwise props i.e. will push the port side to the dock

Taranis, I'm a bit confused here.

A clockwise turning shaft should surely tend to lock up a prop on the thread as the prop is trying to push itself onto the shaft.

If it was a left hand thread yes a right turning prop meeting the opposite resistance of the water would tighten it

To remove the prop you turn it anti clockwise, the water is doing exactly what you would do with your hand it is applying pressure anti-clockwise.

I've just been playing around with a standard shaft and various props.

But really, whatever configuration you have you should use a locknut.

And especially if you have Prop Shop's finest hanging off the end of your boat....
