If you look at the belt the join is just at the 5:30 position under the flywheel so if the joint is separated and then as suggested, its ironed out flat then rejoined, due to it's own weight would there not be some sag in a belt like this i.e. not as taught as a a belt on your car or to a fan unit etc but sag both top and bottom., google images youtube etc might confirm.
And while having done that -in an initial search, differing views of all those that came up only two had the belt attached to the generator, one taught and one as believed.
