Why do 'traction' engines usually have only one cylinder? ..... even the later designed ones!
Train engines / locomotives very quickly moved to to two cylinders.....

I can think of two possible reasons.1. The single cylinder gave them enough power for their needs so they didn't need the extra weight and complexity of a second cylinder.2. They could take the engine out of gear so could manually move the piston to the best position for starting when back in gear. With a single cylinder it is possible to  have the piston in a position where it will not self start. Locomotives could not adjust the piston position in this way as they are always in gear (the whole train would need moving to make the adjustment.) By having two cylinders then one of them will always be in the right position for starting, just like boat engines use two cylinders for this, if a single cylinder is stoped in the midle of the pond it may not restart.

So wouldn't two cylinders have the same effect on a traction engine i.e. one always able to start the engine like a train, though the weight seems to be a better reason.

I thought this had 2 cylinders, it certainly has 2 pistons and 2 valves.
Hi all more progress on this it really is a lovely kit, I wish they would release some of the others they used to make.

And I've finally bitten the bullet and started painting the lines on the wheels(I've been avoiding it as my eyes and hands are not as good as they were in my 20s)

Looking at the cylinder block it appears to be a compound engine.

Ah yes!.... I just thought it was the valves.... but it's far too big for that, isn't it?

I wondered if rubber sheet would do it? I have red thera band stuff that was given to me by a physiotherapist.  Its easily super glued so you could make a belt with as much tension as you want, I imagine you dont want it tight.

Is there any possibility of shrinking your existing belt with a hair dryer, obviously not on the model.

The real generator would have been on sliding mounts to take up any slack - the model indicates those slides so can you re-position the generator to tighten the belt?

Not really there were 4 pins to locate it on so not easy to move

Were the original full size ones a continuous belt or joined with a scarf joint or something?

I was thinking you could try ironing it between layers of cloth on a low heat to at least flatten the belt and maybe a join under the flywheel? Does it have to turn or are the parts glued?

If you look at the belt the join is just at the 5:30 position under the flywheel so if the joint is separated and then as suggested, its ironed out flat then rejoined, due to it's own weight would there not be some sag in a belt like this i.e. not as taught as a a belt on your car or to a fan unit etc but sag both top and bottom., google images youtube etc might confirm.

And while having done that -in an initial search, differing views of all those that came up only two had the belt attached to the generator, one taught and one as believed.

I never noticed the join. Lol. I would imagine different owners would have different ideas on how tight the belt should be, also would they adjust it at different times, leading to either being slack or tight depending on when the photos were taken? I was thinking red Cordura fabric looks quite like the belt fabric used on the model. Its not stretchy so would have to have any slack accounted for before glueing. A chamfered joint might be a possibility?

I find it interesting that the real Pendle Princess is owned by Bandai, and is in their own museum.

Try in hot water twice letting in dry fully before the next soaking (tumble drier does wonders) good luck, the build is looking soooo good  :-))

Hi all well I had a cunningly clever plan for the pin stripes on the wheels, turned out it was neither cunning nor cleve.
I thought I would get some green insulating tape cut thin strips off and stick them on (turns out its almost impossible to cut thin enough strips consistently and even when you do its incredibly stretchy and shrinks back to size withing about 10 seconds of sticking it. So back to hand painting I don't like to think how many hours of painting and repainting have gone into what I've got done here (and im not even half way there) and im not anything like happy with it.

When I did this in my teens I remember being really chuffed with the finish I achieved then, I don't think I will ever be chuffed with the finish I achieve now.

Did you try anything with the generator belt?
