SLEC Fairey Huntsman 31 - 47". Question
« on: October 15, 2020, 09:10:22 pm »

Hi all,
I'm busy building an Aeronaut Jenny and rediscovering how great it is to work in wood again having previously built the Aeronaut Queen.
Whilst building i have a tendency to plan my next project! I'm contemplating the SLEC 47inch Huntsman but I'm wondering if this is the old 'Precedent ' kit or has it been redesigned and improved???

Hope someone can throw some light on this!

Cheers,

Dave

Morning Dave

I doubt that it has been redesigned much if any as it is a tried and tested design. Evidently the last of the Precedent kits were poor because of poor quality timber and poorly cut out parts due to worn tooling.

This would have been addressed by SLEC though as they are suppliers of very good quality timber products and the parts are laser and router cut and you get a laser etched planked deck as well now.

UKMike in his Fairey Huntsman aft Cabin Becomes a Sports Fisherman thread in Pleasure Boats etc. has used the kit as the basis for his build and is the man to ask. PM him if he doesn't see this thread.

David Milbourn produced a plan and
Slec produced there 1/16 scale.
They then produced the 47 inch monster from the same plans.

Sorry chap but you have got your facts wrong.

DM produced the drawings for the 34" and 47" Modav/Precedent kits first, many years ago and only recently designed the 1:16 kit for SLEC. The designs have completely different constructions with the 1:16 having a flat deck which you build from for ease of build.

The 47" SLEC kit I understand was done in house and looks to be an update of the Precedent kit but with little involvement from DM. No doubt he will set the record straight if I'm wrong.

That's 100% correct, Chris. I had nothing to do with the design or construction of the new 47" version, although Ian did ask my advice on a suitable brushless motor for it. O - I also did the CAD template for the scribed deck planking.

I stand corrected!

Still, Dave was responsible for the SLEC Huntress which is a nice size at 34 inches.

Well then
I stand corrected.
Pity they never used David’s plans for the 47.

The 1:16 scale version was designed for liteply construction. I doubt if that would have been suitable for a 47 inch boat which would have meant revising the construction process in many areas to accommodate more robust materials. Would have been an interesting excercise though. Be interesting to have Dave's comments on that.

Given that many 47" H31s are fitted with thumping great big Zenoah petrol motors or the like then I would have reserved the liteply solely for the superstructure. The hull construction might have been a cross between the old kit and the 1/16 scale version but with a camber on the deck and double-diagonal planking along the sides to get that flare. Block balsa is a pig to shape at that size and D/D planking is something I wish I'd discovered 48 years ago when I did the old kits. None of this, incidentally, is intended as a critique of the new kit as I've not seen one and it would be unfair to comment in any circumstances.

Still, 'tis water under the bridge now and I ain't gonna make another one at any scale. Over to you Mr Fellows.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the great responses so far, it's heading me in the direction of the 47" beast although the Huntress does look like a good looking craft as well...........might have both sooner or later!!!!😁

Yes, Fairey Dust!

Back on topic the Fairey's really do have something special with their designs, the marine equivalent of th E Type Jag. They just look right and are so easy on the eye. Despite a degree of pracical simplification I think thet Dave Milbourn has really captured the essence of the boats with his work. I'm really delighted with the appearance and performance of my 1:16 Huntsman and Swordsman.

I ordered the 47" ver from Slec Thursday. I will take some pics and let you know how different it is from the smaller slec one  and the precedent one.

Thanks Graham, really appreciate that. It's such a shame we've lost most/all of our high street model shops. My local shop(s) years ago were in Southampton i.e Hobby Lobby and Solent models, loved going to them and miss the experience of going in to buy a kit and having a rummage before dishing the dosh!

Thank God for MB Mayhem!!!!

I've recently sold a nicely built Precedent 47" I bought ready built to a fellow club member as I found it a bit big for my needs. He's already replaced the MFA 850 with a big brushless motor and it goes very well! It looks smaller on the water!

All my builds, including a Huntsman 31, are at a scale of 1:12 which I find a nice size.

That's a great picture Chris, very inspiring. Think I'm getting the Fairer bug! I've been tended towards the grey funnel stuff but after building the Aeronaut Queen and now the Aeronaut Jenny (which coming along nicely, ready for the skins now!) I'm leaning heavily towards fast cabin cruisers, they give you the opportunity for a bit of speeding and a bit of cruising. Is it me but do the Faireys cut the water nicely, they have a great looking stance on the plane!
Think I'm falling in love with a Fairey!!!!! HELLLLLLLLLP!!!!😁

It is a great picture, the new owner took it. Hopefully seeing it Monday if the weather is favourable. Yes, Faireys do look good and handle nicely.

Get out whilst you can! To show you how bad it can get I've got 5 builds on the go at the moment; 2 with the superstructure on and 3 where the hulls are nearly complete. Plus drawings produced for a motor sailer to start soon and another idea on the cards! And a very nice Huntress that DaveM built.

What brushless did he go for, the slec recommended g60 is now very hard to find, I was thinking 5030-400 ?
