The dark art of Steam
« on: May 08, 2023, 10:24:15 am »

Towards the end of last weel I sent off for plans for the 42" Miranda steam launch from Sarik.   Now here's the problem.   I have no idea who the go to guys are for the likes of steam engines etc.     Fully machined is the way I would like to go as I don't have a lathe.   The only thing in my favour is that I have done a lot of stick soldering in an earlier life so I would be prepared to tackle boiler construction.

Any recommendations apart from keeping well away from cheapo imports.

I've always found Jerry at Clevedon Steam exceptionally helpful.

Or maybe something from Chiltern Model Steam would take your fancy?  I have no experience as a customer but their machined kits seem very reasonably priced.

If you want steam parts Jerry is the person to go too.  If he hasn't got it he will make it for you  - I have experience of this and his parts are just lovely.

If you want a boiler / evaporator / gas tank then Nigel at Pendle Steam is the man - no one makes better in the UK in my opinion.

The both give free advice which is well worth taking.

Thanks for the info gents.   Looks as if I have a lot of reading to do.    Since I posted this I have discovered that Mobile Marine Models also do a steam launch in fiberglass and it's almost the same length as the plan I'm waiting for.     A few phone calls to be made when the ball and chain is not within earshot.
