Queen Cabin Cruiser
« on: October 25, 2020, 08:24:29 am »

Hi All

Got this Aeronaut Queen a few months ago second hand.

It has no chine or spray rails on it and the vanish work has runs all over it !!!

The windows have not been installed right and leak !!!

So it's not the greatest of models.

So a few repairs to the window, I did run the boat, but not happy  finish.

It's going into the workshop for a bit of mods and TLC.

HI All

After adding a 10mm square timber strip across the motor frame to stop the motor shaking on the mount.

I starting on the strip down and adding chine and spray rails.

A lot more sanding to get this side right.

Also strip down the vanish on one side, what a mess!!!

Found a small hole in the side which was under a sticker!!!

Hi All

On to the windows !!!

I am using orange perspex from some old night/sunny day car visors.
Cut and heat bend the forward cabin and windscreen ones.

Mask up each section with masking tape, sat back in position and trace out around the windows.

Slightly cut over the outside of the line and remove the masking tape leaving the windows covered.

Rough up the glue areas, add glue and fix into position.

Leave the masking tape over the windows for painting/vanishing.

The perspex on the windscreen and forward window add strength.

I built one of these myself a couple of years ago, they can be a bit of a challenge to build but there's no allowance for sloppy workmanship. The windows I must say are a pain (pun intended!) and it looks like you've got a good start on these! As for the spray rails, I'm not sure if the instructions called for them to be added, I don't think I did, but they do look good and give it that Huntsman look to the boat.
I'm building the Jenny at the moment and coming along nicely. No spray rails on this either. Not sure whether to fit them or not as I wouldn't want to mess around with hydrodynamics of the hull. Wonder if or does it not.....anyone out there know???

Anyway, following this resto with gusto. Looking forward to the end result. Looking good so far!😊off

(Looks like the chine rails were initially missed off)

Chine rails are important because they help with turning and stop water going up the sides and over the deck so are pretty much essential.

Spray rails or strakes on full size boats are used to provide lift to make the hull more efficient and easier to get on the plane as engine power is usually traded off against fuel consumption. No problem on a model of course where the power to weight ratio is generally much better and getting on the plane is no problem. Models tend to have them if scale or because they look better. My Club 500 race boat doesn't have them and performs well.

Hi All

Finish installing chine and spray rails.
Hoping it turns a very wet running boat into better planning/turning and drier running boat !!!

I added chine rails the my 1920 gentleman's runabout and it made the world of different.

Boats did not have chine rails in the 1920's !!!

The chine strips and strakes look smart and should both help the boat to run drier and improve the performance too!

Nice work - I am looking forward to seeing your future progress with this restoration  :-))

What a pretty looking boat.
I'm sure your upgrades will be worth the work.
Looking forward to seeing the finished item and hopefully some running shots or video.

Harry

I do like the contrast between white paint and varnish. You'll soon be tearing up the canal!

Hi Lads

The Queen is back in the water!!!

One of the lads driving like it was stolen whilst I was on the camera.

At slow speed the spray rails work great, also in the turns as well.
The chine rails have cut down the water spray at speed.

Motor is an old 50mm 919kv brushless running on 4S with a 2 blade plastic prop.

I have just seen a video of your Aeronaut Queen running on your local club waters and she certainly gets a shift on.

What motor and prop size did you fit Harry?

Hi All

The boat is running an EMAX BL2820/07 919kv on 4S and a 2 blade 50mm plastic prop.

https://rctoystasmania.com/forums/topic/boating-the-canal-14th-nov-2020/

The chine/spray rails made a big difference in both straight line and turning performance.

That is a nice attractive model of a typical classic cabin cruiser from the 1960's, and at around 3ft long it is a nice "usable" size that is not too big to store or transport and yet is big enough to cope with almost any water conditions that we are likely to find on our own local ponds and lakes.

I have seen pictures of the Areonaut Queen before, but never realised it was such a large boat  - but now I have seen yours, I am very impressed - and with its performance too.  Very nice  :-))
