From what I recall the hurricane on these ships was a one use event. Once launched and mission ended, unless there was an airfield within range (unlikely) return was a ditch alongside the ship and a cold dip for the pilot.
Whats in the bucket ? probably compressed air for the catapult.

It must be an addition of some sort because this is from same sequence of IWM pics of Empire Faith.

Any possibility that that was used to fuel the Hurricane before launch? Having a load of 100 octane on deck all the time was not a splendid idea.

As a possibility someone might have cobbled a blast deflector for the sledge rockets   Quote  :-The ship's master manoeuvred the ship into the wind and raised a blue flag above his head to authorise the launch. (The ship's master stood on the starboard bridge wing to avoid the catapult rocket blast which sometimes damaged the port side of the bridge.)

Gent if you look closely it looks like the engineers /mechanics, are working on the engine and they have leaned the top cover out of the way not many places when your up there plus covered the cockpit with a tarpaulin  so not a bucket.
Regards Howard.
