Not a Fairey!
« on: November 06, 2020, 08:40:15 pm »

I've never built a powerboat before but while sorting pics for Bob (Zooma) I thought I'd give it a go. I reckoned that Fairey needed some contemporary competition so found Ultima Dea while ambling round Google. Had a quick search on here and the name of Sonny Levi appeared only once, from KitS, some years ago and here's the result sofar....Dave M type construction at 1/16, because my local pond isn't huge, with a couple of 2836 brushless from Banggood, it might work. Frankly I've no idea but I'll use it as part of a new learning curve :embarrassed:

Welcome to the world of powerboats Tony - and what a good choice to start with!

Those curvy Italian lines will never get confused with any of the Fairey powerboats.

Your threat to make it in 1/12 scale at a later date to give my Swordsman a run for its money is something I look forward to seeing - although I think the Swordsman will probably look a little dull in comparison.

........maybe I will have to paint it in pillar box red to brighten it up a bit........

Well done and thanks for posting this thread for us all to enjoy. :-))

What a glorious choice to kick off with, well done.  :-))

As you may have gathered, I reckon Sonny Levi is a god of powerboat design. And that's his Delta 28 I have as my avatar here.  :-)

Not a Fairey but there is a connection! Ray Hunt and Sonny Levi separately created/developed the deep-V hull and this was then taken up by following designers including the Fairey designer Alan Bernard!

Interesting choice though Tony and will be good to see it progress.

There is a strong possibility of a slightly larger (Swordsman thumping) 1/12 scale Ultima Dea coming along when Tony has finished "practising" with this small scale "prototype", so there would be a little more space to squeeze that third motor in!

Getting three brushless motors and speed controllers working perfectly synchronised together would probably be a nightmare, and depending on how much 'roll" the model has when Tony puts his foot down, three motors would at least keep the inside and central shaft "engaged"in the water with the possibility of the outside shaft joining in too if the roll angle is not too extreme..........and that would look spectacular!

Thanks All for the welcome to the"Club"
It'll be a steep learning curve to get it right but,  as some of the more warship minded members of Mayhem will know, I tend to bite off too much at times. Luckily, Mr Zippy, I didn't go for G Cinquanta and 4 motors (See attached) for the first one but it's very tempting to reconsider it at 1:12.Bob mentioned synchronising the motors. If a set of 4 from a drone, with control system, could they be part of an effective setup?

Damn, that's a good idea Tony, never thought of using a set up from a drone, as that increases and decreases power to different motors, depending on the controller input. Good thinking and thinking out of the box too.

You know you want to!!!

The Fairey designer is Burnard not Bernard as I posted. Flippin' predictive text. I reckon I spend more time correcting it than it saves!

I know I would do and I've probably got enough ply and liteply from SLEC to make a decent start but just look how much finishing g cinquanta would need (Pic1) and it's when you get to rudders (Pic2 - NO they're not nozzles) like these you could have to fabricate if you were building something like Hidalgo (Pic3).PS If you want to see more of the finish on g cinquanta, look at the Sotheby's ones when she went under the hammer.

Re triple set ups - have a look at 'Lurssen Effect' on Wikipedia - Germany used it on rapid WWII E Boat steering,
I've recently seen a large scale plastic Italeri E Boat r/c conversion fitted with Lurssen steering on here or possibly RC Groups.

G Cinquanta's been on my long bucket list for many years - what a stunning boat - Levi at his best !
would make a superb 'static' model - past experience with long slender vee hulls has proved it would be a 'straight line special'
forget about going round corners at speed - traditional Fairey proportioned hulls perform much better in model form,
MFA's Spearfish model is a great example of an exellent rough water performer.

Talking of Spearfish, I've tried tracking down the full size drawings with no luck to date - if anyone has any ideas please get in touch.

I thought that could very well be the case. Especially after my experience with the good ship "Arquebuse" (See Pointy Thing) which would only steer in a straight line.I chose Ultima Dea by default. Luck maybe?Although, one aspect needs to be taken into account in that GQ tended to ride with more of a bows up attitude, compared to MTB's etc. and this would have the effect of increasing the pivot moment.

mrzippy - if you contact Charles Lawrence, author and archivist for the Fairey Owners Club, for a donation he will send you a PDF of the original Fairey drawings.

I have them for some of my builds and as well being useful for my model drawings they are interesting to look at.

I'll PM you with his email. I had an as new MFA Spearfish kit until recently but sold it as it was a bigger scale than my 1:12 builds and was very similar to the Huntsman 31 Sport (full open cockpit) that I was building. The full size GRP Spearfish hull was moulded on a Huntsman 31 timber hull so you could build a H31 hull and add the Spearfish superstructure.

Thanks very much ChrisF - good thinking contacting Charles Lawrence !
I have some of his posters and a book, all very nicely produced in his own distinctive style - will drop him a line,
and as you rightly say full size plans are fascinating to look at.

I can also thoroughly recommend Sonny Levi's book 'Dhows to Deltas' for powerboat drawings etc it's a great read,
bought mine 40+ years ago and never tire of flicking through it, I suspect nowadays an expensive second hand only item.

Levi's other book, 'Milestones in my Designs', is worth looking at too, but it costs a FORTUNE these days, £240 from Amazon!  {:-{

Luckily I got my copy a long time ago, and it's as well read as 'Dhows to Deltas'.

Gradually going forward with Ultima Dea. 2 motors not 3 but should be enough. Need to get a piece of 1/2inch blue foam or similar for the domed roof of the cabin and once it's shaped I can get into the cockpit.

Nice work Tony and good progress too!

How length will your miniature replica be compared to the "proper" 1/12 scale model that you will build next  %)

Here are the latest pics of Ultima Dea. The windscreen now has a slot along the top rail and the clear stuff slots in after the rest is painted. It's just a case of touching up the very top. Yes, I have made a template for the clear stuff! You may, perhaps, notice the size of the air vent to feed the 3 Maserati engines!

Really nice Tony, its beginning to look like the real Ultima Dea.

Your windscreen is brilliant and I can see the U.D. shape coming together really well  - but your figures need feeding - they have been working too hard without any rest or nourishment  %)

The letter box air intake is perfect and just in time for the Christmas mail.

I am sure that your 1/12 scale Ultima Dea will be brilliant now you have had a "practice run" with a smaller mock-up  {-)
