St Méloir story.
« on: November 08, 2020, 07:51:25 am »

Hello!
Time for another story! :-)
One day ,  reading some magazine , I found a boat which was  ..... 'particular' ? strange ? Funny ? I don't know what word to choose, but she was not inelegant !
she was propelled by an electric motor and I wondered if she couldn't be move with steam ?
Why not? Said I so !! (do tell it but I speak to myself when I am alone!) %%
That's it I'll build it.
Looking for informations here and there , this is finally my friend roy who found me some documentation on it.
Enough to do setting. So after another friend collaboration, for the drawing , I started o cut the wood !
maybe and most probably some Mayhemers will gussying what it is , but we'll discover it little by little.
Attaboy ! Let's go !
Cuts and glue !

Hi Yves,
Have you seen this build. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1433840-Rappahannock-Boat-Works-Torpedo-stern-launch
This is the same as the one that you have done, I hope that it is of interest to you.

Hello!
Thanks  Georges, I did not know this site but good to keep in the file for next builders. :-))
I have seen another building on the same site though, and it has helped me to work out the frame. My frame being sharper !
Thanks for you comments!
When the frame is done, it is time to take cardboard and draw the 4 planks making the hull.  Yes ! Only 4 pieces of wood to stick!
Really easy to do with a good pair of scissors . Life is not complicated when handle from the right side!!
Then , these shapes are re reproduced on 1 mm birch plywood.  Why 1 mm thickness ? Simply because it is easier to fold and follow the hull line.

- Wait on glue and filing bigger defaults.
When every thing is dry & in place, starts the time of sand papering and fiber tissue. {:-{
Notice that I leave only two frame with support extension to ease the work when the hull is upside down.
In fact, this boat is easy and fast to build for a very rewarding result.
We'll know more tomorrow .
Kind regards.

Good evening.
The rough wooden work being finished, it is time to  cover with Fiber tissue (we can see it on the the edges of the hull).
Then getting wet to check on leaks and other defaults. Some dead weight inside to simulate the future one.
Test approved! :-))
Lately a bit of filer and a film of primer before the final paint. And back in the H20 again!
She stands perfectly in her lines . I can even add some weight . The final weight will be 8 kg. On the photo, I must have 5 kg all together.
Ready for the next step!
I've learn that they call her: " Batsteam" ! Maybe because she has some common points with a bat! Or Batman / Batwoman boat!
If someone has an idea .... ;)

Regards.

Note: I said once that my frame is made with birch ! This is wrong , I use poplar. ... and birch only I have no choice.

Hello!

The boiler is a Pendlesteam "Kingdon" type.

So when everything is OK, it is time to finish the deck and the inside.
Also to set the steam plant in.
As I said above, the boiler is a Pendlesteam feeding a Max Hemmens Caton Max II of 4.5 cc.
The propeller is a 60 mm / 4 blades Propshop.

The woodwork looks very nice! Is the engine an old Hemmens?

Hello!
Time to finish or nearly.
Everything is inside but a sun awning that I need to do..... sometime ! %)
Some more details missing , I keep some work for the winter.
She sails perfectly with 2.5/ 3 b solid and the kids love to play with the whistle.
They don’t reallly care about  boat itself ! ;i)))

I do not have the answer for KNO3 as I do not have too much informations about this manufacturer. If you could complete my documentation, I would greatly appreciate.

Regards.

ps: Next week I show you my KURUN ; Clinker launch stored for 17 years.  ;)

Hi Derek!
Yes this is steam.
The way I build my de-oiler allows the steam to escape without any back pressure as with  a closed one .
The steam escapes tangentially to the de-oiler and as it is expending : pressure decrease, temp remains => slight overheat = no H20 !
So after sailing, I have traces of oil on the walls , a couple of cubic inches of water in the bottom .
I always think of the environment and I leave my pack of beer in a clean bucket on the bank ! %) {-)
Best regards!!

Hello, I think your engine is a Hemmens Caton (a predecessor of the Max II).
