This post may be a bit late for this discussion but I now have my turrets working, 
This was done with Capricorn's advice and inspiration.The last part of my build log shows it working.

On switch-on the turrets and director home to a neutral position.  The director heading is set via R/C.  The system turns off when the R/C control is at its minimum, just like a radio volume control.
