Max Hemmens engine history.
« on: November 15, 2020, 10:40:07 am »

Hello!
I am looking for a maximum on pictures and informations about the MH engines.
I'd like to know the difference between the CATON and the MAX II and more !
Below are 2 photos.
The  first one is believed to be CATON with driven feed pump.
The last one is supposed to be a MAX II.
Your help is appreciated.
Regards.

Hello!
It's going to be tough as it is in the boat.
I see if I get something better with a good light!
Cheers.

Hello!
Here I am back again with my questions.
Below are two Max Hemmens engines.
The RED one has top cover with a diameter of 20 mm.
The BLACK one is a bit smaller and has a diameter cover of 18 mm

Question:
- Can someone tell me which one is the Caton and which one is the MAXII ??
It looks easy as the RED one is stamped MAX II and the BLACK one has no stamp or mark on it. But confirmation is welcome.
- The other question and the most important is : Is there other M.Hemmens engines and can I have photos and descriptions, please.

Any answer will be of interest !
Best regards.

I bought a machined kit for one of these from MH years ago for £80.00, put it in a large Saint class salvage tug with a 4" Cheddar boiler and it was absolutely brilliant.

I would go with the red one that has MAX 11  on the slide valve chest, or is that too easy.

Hello Yves,
The black engine is the Hemmens Caton, with 3/8 x 5/8" bore and stroke (9,52 x 15,87 mm). Engine height 3 1/2" (89 mm).
I have seen Caton engines also painted green by the manufacturer.

Obviously, the red engine is the Hemmens Max II - it says so on the label. It has 9,5 x 15,8 mm bore and stroke. Engine height 95 mm. Operating pressure 30-80 psi. Recommended propeller size 4 blade 76 mm.

The Caton is the older engine and I think it evolved into the Max II, which seems to have replaced it, having more features such as integrated lubricator cups with pipes for the crossheads. Bore and stroke seem identical and both engines have piston valves and a piston reverser. The Max II is however somewhat taller and has the pump mounted vertically at one end. The Caton could also have a pump, but was mounted horizontally to one side.

Hi,
This should give an idea. I honestly cannot remember, after all it was 20 years ago at least!
