Bonjour,
To my opinion, the drawing is wrong because gas and steam are on the same side of the membrane, that makes no sense.
Here an example of my way of setting a single membrane gas attenuator (régulator in US ?) :

You would tend to think Cheddar would have made a correct diagram of their own product.  Obviously the steam pressure has to act against the spring that is being adjusted by the top nut but it does seem odd that the steam and the gas connections are on the same side of the diaphragm.  To separate the steam and gas you would have to have an internal seal between the two, which could be a piston with an 'O' ring seal running in an internal cylinder.  Normally the diaphragm would separate the steam and gas.  The only way to be sure would be to dismantle the valve.

You can see very clearly in this image however that the gas connections and the steam connections are indeed on the same side of the diaphragm.

Hello !
Yes , the drawing is right ! We can see below the piston with a groove which is displaced downward when the boiler pressure decreases, allowing the gas passing by from left to right. Classic ! The piston replaces the diaphragme on other types.
The bottom pic show the " High pressure safety port" facing the one on the stand. Kind of pop off ! If the boiler pressure keeps risingfor any reason , it comes to a point where the steam escapes through those ports.
A tuto for calibrating a regulator , made for a friend :
note: Remember that our regulator spring works within  a range of 3 b between the gas tank pressure and the boiler pressure. If a gas tank is overheated and that the pressure gets close to the boiler's one, the burner will flare full blast !
I've seen it with a gas tank touching the boiler. ! O0
note also that there is no adjustable screw for the pilot light. A calibrated porthole is dedicated for that.

%% I need to re-write my explanations. Sorry! If someone can take over for a clear comment in English, I would appreciate !  O0

Thanks for the pictures, that's pretty much precisely how I envisaged the internals to look.
