Perla Malta - 34" Fairey Huntsman 31 aft cabin
« on: December 09, 2020, 10:59:54 pm »

Perla Malta, is a 34" Fairey Huntsman 31 aft cabin, that I won on a well known internet auction site recently.

Due to distance, I took a chance on having it delivered, the hull arrived unscathed, but the cabins/superstructure, not so much. Mind you, that's not the end of the world, because I think I'm going to have to make a new one anyway.

As Faireys go, she's a strange looking craft  :o   I'll let the pictures do the talking  O0

That cabin is way too tall. I suppose someone must have thought it looked nice - to my eyes it's horrible and very little like a proper Fairey (read "travesty").. It certainly has nothing to do with the shape of the Precedent kits. Stick some kettles with flowers in them and a sleeping pussy-cat on the roof and you'd have a passable model narrowboat...

Hi Will

You're not losing the plot are you? You've already started a thread on this Huntsman, unless you bought two the same!

Somebody has at some point spent a bit of time putting some detail into this model. It's just such a shame that such a big part of the boat isn't right and will have to be remade and how it should be. Although, due to the damage, I may now convert this one, rather than the 47" into an aft cockpit version instead.

{-)  Agreed Dave, it really does look strange doesn't it. It's just wrong, so very wrong.

A few more pictures, this time showing the strange additions to the undersides of the hull.

I'm not really sure what the builder was thinking. These mods certainly wouldn't have helped the overall performance and handling of the boat.
If it was correctly build and set up in the first place, then they definitely wouldn't be needed either.

Dave M, Chris F, Zooma, any ideas what they were thinking.

THIS THAT A WING KEEL ?????

To be honest, I don't know what it is called, or what it's supposed to do either. I'm guessing it's supposed to aid stability maybe?

Could the wings at the prop have been an attempt to stop rolling in turns?  Or maybe they were from the Colin McRae school and aerating the prop in turns.  Strange fixture anyway.

There's a few boats on eBay with strange fixed appendages the last few weeks.  I wondered if they were all converted from straight runners.

Hmmm, as nice as that idea is, I don't think my model building skills are up to carrying out that conversion quite yet.
An idea for the future though definitely.

That could have been the builders idea, quite possibly.  A well built and set up Fairey hull wouldn't need anything additional to help with any of that though.  As you say, maybe it was originally a straight runner and the skegs etc were to keep her running true.  I definitely intend changing/removing it though.

They certainly are. In fact they're the SLEC 1/16 kit prototypes. Here's another one which I built for the owner of a real H31. https://www.modelboats.co.uk/albums/member_album.asp?a=43769

Fair play Dave, that looks fantastic. Such a lot of detail on it too.
Gives me something to aim in the direction of at least.

DaveM - do you have any more pictures of the 1/16 Swordsman - i'm especially interested in shots from the front to show the shape of the bow.

Thanks,
