Vorsprung durch Technik :)
« on: December 01, 2020, 09:36:02 am »

In recent days I have been hitting Google looking for info about suppliers for the German SAR (Search and Rescue) boats.

The internet has made the world accessible at our finger tips  - I initially found little info at all until I started to search using German terminoloy for these boats.

Whilst our hobby seems to be in decline, (and with no show activity) there are still a significant number of suppliers of which I am unaware of and due to search engine rankings are unlikely to find without persistance - most of the time if we don't find what we want in the first few clicks we give up and move on.

I wonder if other Mayhem users would be interested in contributing and sharing their supplier base and forums in the creation of some sort of directory that could benefit us all (not just SAR but anything models boats related...)?

This is one site I found - not a suppliers of parts but comission builds ($$$$) - the photography on here is stunning and if nothing else a great reference for some of the Graupner models and a great way to while away some time with a cuppa

https://en.schiffsmodell-manufaktur.de/dgzrs-seenotkreuzer-harro-koebke

This was a supplier of kits that I did find (after some considerable time!)

 http://www.sar-modellbau-shop.de/index.html

Is this directory concept of interest to anyone?

Regards

I know that going directly on to the German eBay also helps find parts/plans that might not always be aware of. If you type ‘bauplan’ you will often find plans/drawings, expanding on this ‘modelbau’ means modelling and if you are interested and in warships the easiest terms to use are ‘schiffe’, ‘panzerschiffe’, and ‘kreigschiffe’ which will translate as ship, armoured ship, and warship respectively.
It does help that I have two mates who speak fluent German to help with more specialised terminology. I have bought plane from German eBay and they are remarkably good, just in metric scales (1/100, 1/50, 1/25) but is easily convertible to our scales.

A few from my favourites list:

An excellent source of information and pictures (rough comparison to the Dreadnoughts plans website)

WW1 and pre WW1 German warship models, pictures and information

A Hungarian website selling Austrian-Hungarian WW1 warships hulls, plans, and 3D printed guns

A German model website which sell a wide range of models but has some very good pictures of completed models

A Ukrainian website which sells predominantly German warships of all eras but the pictures are extremely helpful

Apart from the mayhem traders directory being updated (august 2015 seems to be listed at the bottom) it could include in a different colour perhaps, those traders that are listed here as possible sources and when they become approved by moderators, changed to blue.

Hi Warspite,

More thinking along the lines of quick access - what do you think? - early days so excuse formating etc

as warspite mentions, this is good as long as it is kept up to date.

i will not name any names, but a specific submarine forum has listings of known sellers and suppliers that they claim is updated every month, but some of the links and sellers listed on their page have been gone for decades.

i would hate to be the individual nominated to go through the list every month and verify the links still work, and even then, have they atrophied to the point of uselessness.  (just because a webstore exists, that doesn't mean its still active)

3rd time lucky this time posting I hope -my phone went screwy the last 2 times!  I’ve had similar problems as I work in France and sometimes Google latches onto things (or doesn’t!) and I can struggle to find them again...

There's also Hobby-lobby: very mixed feedback -some of us can't even register to order, or make return contact with them, others have had no issues and are then happy to pay by bank transfer which is very trusting:  http://www.hobby-lobby-modellbau.com/onlineshop/

I also used to visit Euro Maquette near Austerlitz in Paris before lock-down.  No RC stuff, but I've never seen such a big colllection of plastic models including lots and lots of of ships!  The owner does speak English if you approach him nicely.  https://www.euro-maquette.eu/

Sad to say, but I've previously found allot of fittings I've wanted cheaper via UK suppliers, and have been delivered for less and allot qucker than ordering from suppliers abroad to my appartment in France.

…Might I politely suggest a change to the thread title unless we all assume an Audi catchphrase to mean a source for foreign model suppliers?

Cheers,

Rich

Model Boat supplier list and info

If you want to view the detail you can see it here - it's still being created so not all fields are complete

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oFuNlDmm9SRK-yJDtBvENEWFB3UM1sIxjpc-diI_OpI/edit?usp=sharing&fbclid=IwAR171kcObCHOlADfgMoiwQyOBJKLyd9iI4LF51rgeDykCHeRlxZQ8x7qz3I

If you have any info on suppliers of kits/parts/hardware/paint/glue/plans/ image resources etc etc that would benefit others then please do post them and I will update the Google document

The intention was to "share info" - some of the organisations on the list I have not heard of or used before

I was particularly interested in finding info on companies in France and Germany...

This is a German supplier who might be useful for some SAR parts:

https://shop.modellbau-kaufhaus.de/schiffsmodellbau

I have used him a lot of times and never had any issues. Might be worth a look. I have no experience though with delivery abroad.

Hello Swiftdoc,

Thank you for the link - just exploring the site - I think my wallet can sense my excitement!

Thank you to all contributors - hopefully there is some merit to this concept - I have now been made aware of several suppliers I did not know of previously.

Regards
