I am struggling with the reasoning of double planking for my models deck ! The kit has a 1.5mm layer of lime wood deck strips and a second layer of 0.5mm strips of maple and this is all laid on top of 1.5mm plywood base layer. .. I have double layered the hull and this gives a nice smooth final finish. There must be a good reason for double layering the decks but it escapes me, just seems unnecessary . Previously all my single planking has turned out just OK . Is it just that maple is an expensive wood ?
