1/96 HMS Tiger C20 A Smaller Tiger!
« on: December 23, 2020, 08:54:27 pm »

I bought a helicopter cruiser conversion of HMS Tiger back in June just after the first lockdown. I’ve always liked the ugly duckling that many consider her to be but I like the oddness of her!
This particular model does have a rather complicated past and will remain there as she has now come into the light!
Needless to say she is an old model and did have a glaring issue with one piece of detail- the bridge had the wrong amount of windows, not enough of them on the upper bridge. So taking advantage of cyber Friday deals on Shapeways I bought a replacement bridge structure which looks amazing when slotted into place.
She still needs a fair amount of work doing but the bridge is off the to do list!

Hope this pic is not too blurry, it was a very foggy day when I watched her being towed away for scrap. It was really sad to see our last cruiser going, even with that aft addition I still thought they were imposing vessel, shame she did not last enough to participate in the Falklands war, she would have proved an asset.

Dodes
Out of interest both her an Blake were brought in for surveying to to deploy down south.  It was not proposed to use them for their 6" guns but rather as an intermediate landing pad, to help keep the carriers out of the range of the Argentina air force.  Tiger was found to be in good condition considering she had been out of use for a long time, in the end the decision was taken that to loose a ship her size and with a large crew would be politically unacceptable.  A similar plan was also envisaged for the ex HMS Hermes

Thanks for the info, I was thinking of her 3" A.A guns more though. But I should have imagine also manning her would have been difficult then, the large crew etc. When you think that the type 23 down there had 16 heavy machine gun bullets from a plane chopped her main wiring armature/channeling an she ended up as a fast grey target with 2 X 20mm machine guns.

Wonderful looking new bridge. What would we do and where would we be without Shapeways and 3D printing?

T 22 I think, you mean, first T23 not commissioned till 1989  :-))  was that HMS Brilliant, as she took cannon fire into her ops room, some back operational though.  Good image of the damage is shown in the book  Harrier 809

Carry on scratch building, the Tiger bridge was not that bad to build, and having access to the actual ship made it a lot easier to understand

Yes sorry, 22 and Brilliant. Thought the name was appropriate. The story came to me from service personnel who knew alot about what went on, not the sanatised official P/R.

Just to add a little to this thread, the original main armament was 4 six inch guns which may not sound a lot but believe they were automatic so had an exceptional high rate of fire very much more than Belfast with 12 six inch guns. Rate of fire with modern weapons counts for a lot!

I used to have a model of Tiger as a child - Eagle I think produced it to an odd scale so it was quite large! I still have an original Royal Sovereign again I think by Eagle.

Cheers

Geoff

Chris it seems that people memories from then are a bit clouded, but it seems it MAY have been a squadron badge, if so it did not last long and there is no recorded image of her wearing it again.  One lady had that model with the red and white on her wedding cake and till has it today

A 6inch gun firing that fast! Amazing. It must have put the system under some stress as those are big rounds and need some popping out. I wonder if there was a maximum number of rounds they could fire before they needed to stop and cool down? I can understand the captain knowing when the fire mission has done it's work and would stop blazing away wastefully.

Hi Chris

Hopefully next week I’ll be playing with the smaller Tiger- managed to sneak some leave in at the last minute as I have been told that I have too much accumulated! It’s at my home address and I work at Brize Norton on 47 Sqn during the week living on the airfield barrack blocks- definitely wouldn’t fit through my door or sit on the table in my room! :}
Last few weeks have been hectic trying to get aircraft serviceable to help out country wide and globally.

Hi Chris

It will be hopefully a nice relaxing week model making :}
My Tiger will hopefully have working lights, radar rotating, and hopefully traversable turrets. Going to fit smoke foggy units for a bit of atmosphere.
