Interesting, in OZ we don't seem to have a BMW thing like Volvo drivers had 30 years ago

Five years ago, SUBARU WRZ's  were out running the :police: cars, however clearly the most popular 'get-a-way' car today her after a shooting/robbery or whatever illegal activity are AUDI's ....and usually found 10 km away from the scene & burnt out :o

I do like the new BMW X3, so does that make me a 'dumb  :embarrassed: thinker' in your eyes?........what is the dumbness criteria or quotient you use?

[however the trade-in for my 2006 Mitsubishi VRX Lancer wagon s probably not a lot] <:(

The BMW thing in the UK is because, as my late wife used to put it, 'They drive as if they bought the WHOLE damn road along with the car!'

Not indicating (especially when exiting a motorway from the right hand lane...) is part of that brain set. Why should they indicate, we plebs should KNOW what they're doing ahead of time!

And what's that about Volvos? One of mine is a Volvo 850 Estate, in case I EVER finish my 'Atlantic conveyor'......

I think that Audi have joined BMW as the greatest plonker drivers. You certainly see more "mums about town" in Audi than BMW around here.

Remember the "BMW lane" thing on motorways where if you used the outside overtaking lane you would very quickly be told off by a BMW driver for using their private lane.

I think its with all German manufactured marques, its a perception that they paid a lot of money for their vehicle and you don't want to hit their car as it will cost you a lot to repair their car as they will always claim they were not in the wrong, also the power ratio is greater than some marques and they don't have time to use indicators as they will be rushing off soon as their round the corner.

Friend of mine has a BMW as have I. last year he was driving into Guildford when a female in a jag 4x4 came through the lights on red and T boned him on the drivers side. When the dust had settled he found himself sitting in the vegetation surrounded by inflated air bags and their associated fog with an angelic voice (BMW emergency response) quietly enquiring through the radio if he was OK, and telling him that the emergency vehicles had been alerted and were on their way. He was OK although both vehicles were totalled . Its the little things that endear BMW's to their owners . Those who decry them are missing out on one of the best things in life. Reserved for those who's are proficient and enjoy motoring in a finely engineered machine.

A few years back, I had a two year assignment in the UK; not being used to driving on the "wrong" side of the Road, I decided to take lessons. The instructor gave me heck, when I used my signal to change lanes; he said as no cars were around, I was distracted by reaching for the Turn signals; he said, only use if many vehicles are around.

Is this common teaching?

Is it heck.  An instructor might tell you it is not necessary to signal if you are turning left or right and you are sitting in that designated turn only lane . But otherwise you should always signal even if you cannot see another vehicle of consequence , in the seconds from checking your mirror to making the  manoeuvre a  fast vehicle could be upon you ( around here the Police use some main roads in their response crew high speed pursuit training) . Also their could be crossing traffic ahead that might be obstructed from your view and would appreciate knowing which way you are heading.
My biggest beef in this neck of the woods is at a local roundabout, just off the turn to the town is another junction I have to wait at , you see a car approaching indicating left turn but he or the car has not cancelled the turn signal for the roundabout and in fact he goes straight on (nasty) The other is the car that is not signalling at all so you wait patiently and he then does a left turn and you have missed the chance to pull out (Grrrrrr)

to Wainwright then the Lady drove on home to Edmonton memories. Very slow  speed limits then

Just indicate EVERY time. Then you'll get into the habit and won't need to waste time thinking about whether you should or not. And its not JUST to tell other vehicles where you're going, pedestrians need to know too, even if you can't see them.

And while I'm on my hobby horse, indicators are meant to show where you're ABOU to turn, not the direction you're already turning 'cos then it's ruddy obvious!

Hi I agree always use the indicators, just because you cannot see a car is not enough, and recommendations are to indicate you are turning aprox 8 seconds before you do.

So many in the UK use the indicators as they turn!  I was driving home yesterday and indicating a left turn and a car waiting to pull out waited until my wheels started to turn left before pulling out.  That speaks volumes as to how wary it has made some drivers.
If I were still driving more than the minimal I do now I would buy a dash-cam.
The entertainment now available in a car has to reduce the attention of the driver to the road ahead.  When I bought my current car (2nd. hand) on my list was not having a built in Sat-Nav.  The top version of the car I have, has the Sat-Nav screen down at chest level, not good for me anyway.
I do use a small one that sticks on the windscreen without obscuring the road ahead and only fit it when needed.
regards
Roy

Hi Roy

The driver that waited must have a defensive driving course Like I did years ago !!!

I was told by my instructor that it is optional to use an indicator in a filter lane, sometimes I do sometimes I don't, most of the time I use my indicators all the time including overtaking buses at stops and cyclists to let others know my intentions, common sense dictates.

Can we get back to jokes and humour and forgo the car discussion please.

My grandson passed his test recently with just one "mark" against him.
Whilst on aroundabout and in the arrowed lefthand lane he signalled left for the upcoming exit and that is a 1 point error.
It is stupid and slows traffic down as other cars wait to see if you are actually turning.
