Sea Raven
« on: January 04, 2021, 09:58:41 am »

Hi All
I started this boat over four years ago, so it's time to get it finished !!!

I started with the Fairey Swordsman's plan and lengthened it by 4 and 1/2".

Add 1/2" to the bow for a more pointed look.

Add 1"between frames B1 to B2,B2 to B3, B3 to B4,B4 to B5.

Also added in chine and spray rails !!!

Changed the cabin windows to match to longer lines of the boat.

So a quick picture look a the beast so far !!!

That's an interesting build and has taken shape quite quickly too.
Will be interesting to see the finished article and if the partial Fairey lines are still recognisable by then.

Following with interest.

It was only by chance that I saw your new thread Harry - I don't often scroll through to see if anything new has appeared - but I liked the pictures that you shared with me of your part-built Sea Raven when I first joined Model Boat Mayhem and I aways liked the "spooky" look of it.

The extended side skins that reach down to form the chine spray rails is brilliant and probably took a lot of extra work but they look like they will really perform well and make the time spent to include them well worth the extra effort.

Extending the Swordsman to a similar length to the Rapier should work well - almost a Super Swordsman - but with a difference!  The nose is pointed like a Rapier too - but not so extreme and probably looks better too.

I have also been thinking about making a Super-Swordsman type of hull as I really like the size of my Rapier and the way it performs and I think the way that you have lengthened the Swordsman hull by adding 1" between all the bulkheads works well.

I was probably going to add the length in the cockpit area only as that is where I had guessed that Fairey had "stretched" the hull, but my "Super" (although based on the Swordsman) will also be a free-style design and I think the way that you have lengthened the hull is more proportional and will suite the boat better.

I see you have installed an alloy water-cooled motor mount - something I have become very keen on fitting into all my hulls as it makes motor changing so easy - and they can be run "wet" or "dry".

This will be a really nice looking boat and I will enjoy seeing the build progress to its completion and finding out if it goes as good as it looks like it should!

Nice job - well done !

Hi All
Started planking down the deck sides, as well installing the radio gear in a yacht which I swap for a small Lipo battery.

Thats looking good Harry - I don't know what sort of woods that you have cut your planks from, but they do look good and it make a nice change to see some colourful decking to add some character to the boat.

It also looks like you have a bit of a monster in-runner tucked away in the engine bay, so your Sea Raven should go as well as it looks.

Nice work!

I have cut some hardwood down to approx 1mm thick and it would look good as decking, but it has a "sawn" finish as it come off of my bandsaw.

This can be seen in the pictures of the planks that I cut to patch-up the hull on the Corvette that has a restoration thread here on Mayhem.

The saw-cut finish was ideal for that job as it probably helped the glue to penetrate the open grain surface of the wood better, but for deck planking it needs a nicer smooth finish (like yours!).

I have seen small machines that are made to plane thin marquetry wood down to an even thickness and I would guess that they would be perfect for a job like this - but I doubt that I could ever justify the purchase of one of those machines just to smooth a small amount of decking from time to time.

How did you do yours Harry?

Hi Zooma

Glue to planks on and sand them down after !!!

I finally finished the deck planking and seal the veneer with two coats of sealer.

Next is the vanishing !!!

Beachcomber - thats a name from the past Leaky - I had forgotten about that one!

At 52" x 15.5" she was a big boat - designed for large two stroke motors like Zenoahs etc. and a bit like a sleeker looking Vivacity - another big old favourite!

I don't suppose anyone happens to know what date "Model Maker and Model Boats" magazine had the build review feature in it?

Bob, Beachcomber doesn't ring any bells while I have been looking through the Model Maker mags that I have bought recently. I will double check later, in case the review is in one that I already have.

I can narrow the year down to 1967 Will.

April 1967 is the one you need Bob.

I've only got various Model Maker mags from 1954 to 1965 I'm afraid.

Hi, displacement was about 40lbs if I remember correctly, the battery was 14 of that. There was space for another battery but it ran for two hour at full speed so I never fitted second battery. The copper tube is actually phone cable for the lighting. Its woodstained to blend in. The planking was individually sanded strips of 1/32 ply over the 1/4 ply decking. The speed controller was the original golf trolley one, with a hacked 1/4 scale servo to turn the golf trolley knob 180 degrees. I also included a fan as I wasnt sure if the trolley speed control would overheat. It didnt, and would never have done, it drew 8 amps at full throttle, whether the prop was in the water or not. The bar, stairwell, rear cabin and wheel house were all lit, and switched from tx. I had to sell it, due to the small people. Lol. I sold it with a radio set that cost me £250, so I basically got 150 for all the rest. Then my wife said, 'I liked that one, why did you sell it?.......
Ah well. I really enjoyed the build. I may make another smaller one. I have made a smaller Vic Smeed Rorqual as I had made a full size one years ago, still to be completed (this year, definately! Lol)

The cooling fan drew air through one of the rear louvres, through a carboard tube, seen above motor then exhausted the (unwarmed) air through the other louvre. I was very happy how it all turned out. It was a big beast to lug around, it was after I built this that I decided to build my man carrying Vic Smeed Starlet yacht. I thought if I was going to have to transport a large model boat, I may as well make it so I could fit in it. Mary Jane was 4 ft 4 inches long, my starlet was just over 7ft.
