Project 2021 - Building from plans
« on: January 09, 2021, 05:28:32 pm »

Afternoon all!

I've had a go, once before, at building from plans..... due to lack of motivation with current projects, thought I'd take on another project & have another go.... instead of finishing projects I've already started!  ( It's a 'bloke' thing girls! )

This is an area selected areas of a plan:

( Heavily edited to avoid copyright issues )

I know enough to copy and redraw the  sections for cutting out:

You need a keel, slots in the frame for the keel and cut outs in the frames to take longitudinal pieces. You will also need to work out how much of the frames you need to remove to give internal space.

But first get yourself a building board 2cm thick mdf is good.

I can send a pdf on planking if you wish.

Draw all the thickness of your wood onto the plans and remember if you want to stay true to them, cut accordingly. And remember when fairing the hull, allow for the angles, leave a few extra mm on the sections with more angle (bow and stern)  so when you fair them back before planking that you still have the same section.

....lastly, nothing wrong with taking the opportunity of adding a couple of mm on the beam and draught if it will make the final model more stable or easier to construct.

PS plan where the motors and rudder will be including access hatches -I always screw up and have to hack some wood out after!  Never put something mechanical where you can't get to -itll be doomed to fail.

This is great advice - also if your working from plans know your lines  O0   So when you cut your wood are you cutting to the inside or the outside of the line.  If you measure the plans you will know which it is as getting it wrong can make quite a lot of difference  - good luck with the build are you going to do a build log??

Yes.... just gathering ideas and checking stuff.... you know, measure twice, cut once!

Then throw it away and start again!   O0

I'm actually planning on building from the Jim Pottinger plan of Sea Shepherd (Model boats Feb 2009 ),
after seeing Doug's wonderful model at Deans Marine last year.  - Model boat shows.... remember those?!   {:-{

( Distorted for copyright )

Studying the plans, can someone explain to me the lines / No.s on the bow please - WL 3 2 1 - and how I use them?
( Do I need them at this stage? )

WL is the water line. The others are buttock lines which are useful if you are building 'bread and butter' style. Heresy alert: I have never used them when building plank on frame. Others may have their own ideas.  8)

This diagram hopes to explain how you can correlate one view with another using the buttock lines. A useful cross check for plan inaccuracies.

Martin, just so you know, my model was built at 80% of the published plan. Using the plan as is yours will be considerably bigger.
Good start, just needs som wood and spray glue for the next stage. Good luck  :-)) :-)

Buttock lines can be helpful in PoF also if you want some extra longitudinal bracing at bow and stern where the frames are more likely to twist as you apply the planking.  Depends how many stringers you use.

Ps: the horizontal lines 1 to 3 are waterlines also
