Snow and more snow
« on: January 14, 2021, 10:33:16 am »

This morning having pulled back the curtains once again we were greeted with a large amount of the white stuff. Like last week we hope it melts quickly.  The elevation of our house is 670 feet above sea level which means any snow fall can be quite heavy.  :(( :(( :(( :(( :(( :(( No walking today more building. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

It does look beautiful Stan but having said that it can be treacherous for us older folk to get about, luckily we hardly see the white stuff on the south coast, stay safe Stan  :-))

This is the whitest I’ve seen so far! Freezing fog and ice last Thursday! Really uncomfortable to be out in on Brize Norton 47 Sqn aircraft bays- in the background you can just make out the foggy outline of a A400 Atlas.
Second picture shows the ice reforming minutes after the Herc was de-iced!
The ground temperature at the time was -4 deg C but the wind chill factor knocked down to -7 deg C!

When I was at Brize, many many eras ago, we had B52s deployed there one autumn. I was in the ops room when an American engineer radioed in to ask what the chill factor was. The met man was asked and replied his tables didn’t go high enough for the ambient temperature. When told, the engineer asked what that meant. The reply was “Get back to work and stop moaning” Man management US style.

While visiting my last employer's HQ in Minneapolis during the winter of 1982, the local temperature went down to -32 F.  {:-{  I still have the T-shirt for that year.

F & C are the same at -40 so it was VERY cold, so much so that my shoes froze to the car park outside my hotel. NOT recommended.  :((

Absolutely nothing around Norwich although it has been a dull dark day with occasional drops of rain.
Monday & Tuesday were sunny and very pleasant. Our washing on the line dried nicely. Yesterday dry but not sunny.

A couple of inches of wet slushy snow here (halfway between Dundee & Perth). Roads were ok but I think it was worse the other side of Perth.  Grandkids were sledging down the street and managed to build 2 snowmen before I dragged them in soaking wet to dry off and do their home schooling (bad grandad!).

No building just now cos having to childmind as both their parents are key workers, mind you the temperature in the shed/workshop was -3C mid morning the other day so I'm not too bothered about missing building time.

Stay safe, stay warm

Sorry to sound smug, but here in London N3 it's positively tropical - for the time of year.

Stay safe everybody

Questtion for NickB waiting for the snow  %)

Presuming that the propeller blades would be @ zero pitch when the engines are shut down, so why is the pitch rotated thru ~~90 degrees for @ rest?

Would they not support snow in this orientation?....and would they not be de-iced prior to engine start-up?

No snow in Falkirk, that's between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Actually we've had extremely cold conditions, almost an ice storm last week. Really quite warm today, didn't even scrape the cars this morning, just dusted off the hail from yesterday evening.  We were promised 4" on the forecast.  I have to keep my Merc clear because it's all frameless windows and keyless entry.  Can't get in when it's cold, and can't shut the doors when I can get them open to warm it up properly inside because the windows won't drop to close the door after its opened.

We need cold and snow in winter and it shouldn't be a surprise, don't understand why we panick over it (whipped up by the media).  We had -37 celcius when I was working in Finland, a cold winter by their standards but we just got on with it.  Must admit the legally required snow tyres helped though!

A cold crisp start to Friday morning. Roads are bad with ice still no sign of the grit wagons looks like the car will be staying in the drive. Hopefully the thaw should begin this weekend.

The prop blades are in feathered position, possibly to stop any rotational force from winds when the engines are stopped. Raflaunches can probably give a proper explanation for this.

Jim is quite correct- it’s to stop the wind spinning the propeller gearbox which can result in oil being drawn from the bearings it’s supposed to lubricate. It’s also part of our shut down procedure as the prop feathering is connected to the emergency T-handle which shuts off fuel, oil, and electrics to the nacelle. The beta tube which controls the prop by diverting oil to one side or the other to maintain the correct prop angle for the required speed. If these are set up incorrectly or they are damaged you can get one of the most frightening things to occur on a Herc engine ground run- prop run away! A scary event which can go horribly wrong if not caught in time.
