I got a reaction and crazing the couple of times I tried this so the answer is probably not.  Maybe someone could suggest a barrier coat to spray on first to seal the humbrol?I

I use Humbrol paints all the time and I always use Humbrol clear cote varnish to finish off my models.

Definitely not. It will react.

You can use Halfords lacquer over most types of acrylic paint though but not enamel.

One thing I learned and still hate about "internet modelling" is this is still a fundamental and foolheartedley step to remove in most cases, especially when you have the materials at hand!

...you can wait for a guaranteed answer alomost as long as it will take to do it sometimes.

PS:  As a convert to Revell I struggle to hold my wrath back against anything Humbrol pass off as an "enamel" these days!!!

Thank you for your kind comments about Humbrol the same could be said about Revell but not lets start WW 3. We could argue about paints forever surely the golden rule is not to mix them. If you go down this route talk to people that make the paints. Halfords paint cans have a contact number on them this is the paint manufacturer.

Stan, no WW3 -I am a total convert.  But my point to the OP was one thing is for sure there is usually no substitute for trying first if you have the materials.  Personally I find "off the shelf" paints vary wildly these days, and I'm guilty myself of serching 'tinternet for days -when in reality if I have the materials at hand it's part of the learning curve to try it myself in the first place.  If I wanted an answer within an hour, I'd agree -phone the manufacturer, but I'd guess neither of these two would vouch for the other product.

Thank you for the reply. Yes you are right no manufacture would endorse using their products on other paint products. I have leant over my modelling years having stuff  just to hand may be fine but it may give serious problems. With this in mind I made the decision many years not to mix and match especially when it comes to paint finishes.  Having read some of the posts why go to so much trouble trying to find a finish that may cause problems.  But you pays your money and makes your choice

I know you may think this belong in the paint section but I feel It would be good in this section also. The question asked was can I use Halfords varnish over Humbrol enamel. With this mind I decided to do some test trips so are are my findings. Please note all these test strips were allowed to dry for 4 days meaning all the solvents in the paints had dried thoroughly. The golden rule still remains if you are not sure do a test strip hope this helps.

Stan.

Strip one white Halfords primer overpainted with Humbrol Enamel then Halfords matt varnish applied  the enamel suffered crazing  giving a textured finish when dry.

Strip two Halfords white primer  overpainted with Tamiya Acrylic then Halfords  matt varnish  No reaction at all paint nice and smooth.

Strip three Halfords red primer varnished using Humbrol Clear cote enamel varnish no reaction in paint finish.

Strip Four Halfords white primer overpainted with Tamiya Acrylic paints then vanished using  Humbrol clear cote enamel varnish no paint reaction.

Hi just a question regards lacquer I have never used it, so why do people use this, I use Humbrol enamel paints and find it is tough and has a good finish and good water resistance, so I have never needed to use it so not sure why people think it is needed, I do use Halfords primer.
love to here people thoughts.

Usually to seal a matt finish or obtain a stain or matt finish on gloss paints, or to seal over weathering.

I would say no . Most car paints are acrylic based. You can put lacquer over it, The flow chart on the right say other wise .

I have run some practical tests on this.

Halfords Matt and Satin lacquers give a superb finish over Halfords automotive paints and primers and also most acrylic paints but you should NEVER apply them over enanel as the solvent attacks the finish.

My reason for wanting to use lacquer is my powerboat will have a metallic paint finish (Halfords acrylic) and guidance is to lacquer over this.

Also I believe it may help to seal over vinyl decals etc. No way an expert, just throwing in my thoughts.

I guess that there are many ways to paint your boat. Stan’s info gives you the key to what will/won’t work. Whether you choose to use any lacquer is up to you.

I can confirm that their PU lacquer is fine over Humbrol enamels.

I never understand why people intermix paint products. The Halfords matt varnish applied to my test piece crazed the enamel finish. But I will out of interest check with Halfords paint supplier .

There are a number of different Halfords lacquers so you need to be careful which ones you use. This one and it's Matt version will definitely craze a Humbrol enamel surface. They are fine over model acrylic paints though.
