Wartime Radio documentary-Great image of Insect class Gun Boat
« on: February 01, 2021, 11:29:44 pm »

Just a quick note to share a link to an interesting documentary on amateur radio operators helping out in WW2.

Made in 1979 it is well told and has no music :) It has a few references to warships, and the image of HMS Cricket is exceptionally interesting as I believe it was one of only three warships with the High angle 6inch gun that was our largest AA gun. One other was a Big Gun Monitor that had one.

Anyhow, I don't reckon it is half an hour of your life wasted if you watch it! Here: Wartime Radio The Secret Listeners BBC (1979) - YouTube

Hi Ian

Just watched it and didn’t realise the amateur radio enthusiasts were so vital to the intercept of coded messages. The Insect class were used in WW2 as espionage vessels dropping off agents and LRDG personnel along the North African coastline.

I am not sure of the situation today, but when the first Gulf War kicked off, there was a ham radio operator at our place who was given a warning notice that he could be called up to assist the military, if needed. This guy was a civilian, with no military service record, and he was shocked to receive the notice.
