aaah thanks DD they look like what I want on the smitt.

however I am soon to start on the new super structure, if I can do one bit, I can do another bit. gotta get a piece of timber 6" long 2x1 for the bridge, that will also help me keep it all square!

HI Ghost
I have been thinking about your lift problem re the critical bulkhead.
Could you not make a hole in this say 1/2 an inch or smaller so that you could install a ratchet type system to operate the lift, a similar contraption I think  was used in the Supermodels program to open close the back of the boat so that the tank could get out..
Have attached a very crude picture to try and explain what I mean..

now buried under the super structure is a servo (gutted) to provide constant rotation, now I need a switch or speed controller at 5a (forwards only) to provide rotation control for it.

having purchased a miter box, it wont be too difficult to fabricate a new A-frame.

the story so far, Nord Icelandia's superstructure is now getting very close to looking like her final shape. there is of course the final addition of cladding to make the bridge look set in, so the bridge as she is now is to be painted black, though the entire lot needs to have the aft decking done and filler added to various areas, along with sanding down.

as for what she looks like, she isn't too far off now, funnel yet to be made along with the addition of radar antenna and installation into the servo that sits inside the superstructure, then the ballast may need to be trimmed again

well, I think its 1mm styrene that I am using.  as for the old one, I still have it

however I dont like it, so I have started to replace it as the older one isnt quite matching the size for the box, making the back hangar bay look TOO big.  next is a New stern-frame.

How are you joining the wood to the plastic ?  Is it a firmer structure ?

It looks nice and square. Very tidy

kenny, the wood is there too keep it as square as possible, in the back of the 2x1 pine piece are two slots, to which the plastic uprights are slid into, to join the wood to the plastic, one bottle of B&Q superglue, nothing fancy.

next is the ships lifeboat deck, which will sit over the main deck forming an overhang, complete with outrigger arms.  may be a section up front as well to form an external front combing.

some superglue trapped the antenna off the RX so it has had to be severed and re-joined, :( hope it doesn't affect performance.

well this is almost the final shape now, next to go on are the funnel and decks that will be by the funnels, along with some companionways and minor detail.

In the test dock she seems stable as well, initially I was nervous as she was listing to one side, then upon inspection some ballast had shifted.

final water time wont be yet, she has to be painted and its too cold for that at the moment, the decks could be hand painted to their final colour but thats a about it.

windows started on the bridge.

this is a simple method, nothing more than some cladding over the existing superstructure to give depth to it

just the mast left now.

These pics show the funnel that has been put in place, like the rest of the new structure it just needs to be sanded down and filled before the whole superstructure can be painted

a trip on the water today showed that she tends to wander a lot off her given course, and doesnt like running in a straight line, weather that is because of the wind im not sure, however a bilge keel or skeg may be needed.  I will find out after future sailing, however I think that two bilge keels may be better as they could act as a stand, keeping the prop clear if what is under it when sitting on a surface

Hi Ghost

I had a Bilge keel yacht once (scale 1/1) and it tended to sail like a Brick.

All u got ot do is to glue them along length of hull they only need to be around 15mm wide tapering to nothing at ht efront and rear det around 90degrees to the hull or in your csase on hte round part of the hull

Ghost,
Bilge keels are to dampen rolling, wont do anything for windage.

sounds good enough

and with the fact that she likes to roll anyway in corners, they may work there.  as for the straight line running, a centre keel may work as well around the aft end as well may work, i'll see how it goes.

im sure I can get some thick ABS from westbourne
