hi Ghosty, hey its not looking too bad - canny block of flats you are building on it  {-) O0

I definitely like the 'waste incinerator' funnel that you have installed.  {-)

Joking apart, she is looking good there.

As far as your problem regarding not running in a straight line is concerned, what Shipmates60 is saying about bilge keels is definitely correct.   I think the problem may be the actual hull shape.  Adding a skeg or a keel may improve to some degree but, I am afraid that it may be a built in fault that you are going to have to live with.

No worries, she is coming on good.

Hello Ghost!

I definitely think a skeg or two will do the trick by the look of her underwaterbody in the stern. It seems as your rudder is rather big and being of the balanced type you should check that the linkage is really tight, otherwise she will be all over the sea! I've had that problem myself! Keep up the good work, she looks very interesting.

waste incinerator funnel, nah, its inspired by the North Staffs hospital  :P

as for her design, its all in the head, something that true scratch builders would be horrified at, "what no plans eeeeeek" but for a total freelance.

This is todays progress before work

Hi Mark

Looking Good,  I like the fact that you have designed the ship in your head. I wish I could do that, I have trouble following the plans for a kit.

Not even a photograph in sight.

After being told by a couple of people the A-frame was a little too large, it has been remodelled, now shorter and with rams in different position, allowing for more usable deck space.  The heavy duty top brace has yet to be installed

well the top brace is in.

one thing I have noticed, one of the rams is a bit droopy, though off the bank who's gonna notice?

Hi Mark

Gees I am impressed. what sort of room do you have on the inside it looks as if you could have a lot of working parts.

not a lot, no room up front due to radio gear.

and in the aft section, propshaft and servo along with a motor take up a fair bit of space.  there is a servo ready to mount a radar however.

when she gets lit up, the wires will have tio run external on the mast, however I may be able to make a feature of them by painting them to make them look like conduits etc.

Hi Mark

Some fantastic realistic photos with the angle on the water line. Looks a great lake to sail on. But you did mention about the depth. Can only think if the worst happens, it is a long way down, do you have scuba gear.

Good idea to make a feature of your wiring. If you tried to hide it, it would look obvious. Make it stand out and it will blend in. (Sort of doesn't make sense once I typed it, sounded good in my head)

lyn padarn is around 200 feet deep at its deepest point, so if one goes under, bye bye boat!

I have just managed to read this build thread and can I say WOW nice NO Fantastic build, I will add a foot note that you thought that the A frame was a bit big?
I sailed on the Scotian Shore (a survey / dive support vessel) it had a very large A frame ! I know I was the chief engineer in charge of its fitting, the frame was rated at 84 tonne SWL and had three points where it could lift from Oh and the ROV cradle. so well done mate keep up the great work.

Thanks cat. have you got any photographs of where the lift points were on the stern frame.

Right now the stern frame's paint is drying, so after a few coats it will look ok. :)

Sorry its been about eight years and I didn't even carry a camera then O0

The lift points were one very large in the center and then one either side 2 thirds the way out from the center one. the ROV cradle was guided by the outer lines and would submerge to overcome the swell, still bringing the ROV out of the water made your eyes open as soon as it broke the surface it could swing fore and aft and a little bit side ways. At about 6 tonne it could cause some damage when it hit the ship! (often) clients would work in some daft weather conditions? "well the ship could handle it" there gear ? another story.

no probs cat.

the centre one will be probably the simplest one to, probably nothing more than a hollow box with a buffer on the end, probably a tyre fender off a kiddies toy.  use of defunct servo wire or some speaker wire painted black could easily represent any hydraulic connections that are being made.

doors and bulwarks installed, they now just need painting and the stays put on.

Propshaft coupling changed for a new unit, much quieter.  the new coupling is two silicone tubes and a length of butchered propshaft

On the water, Nord Icelandia has proved to be quite stable when there isnt a big breeze, as her sides tend to catch the wind, she is still prone to wandering, so in the winter I may get a skeg fitted.

With just minor work to do on her now, she is almost done, and yes I am happy with the results, and for one who builds kits, would I attempt another semi-scratch, maybe, though not yet.
