Hotchkiss 3 pounder gun on Mk V mount
« on: February 14, 2021, 03:05:17 pm »

Can anyone help me locate photos or drawings of this Hotchkiss gun as fitted to Fairmile B boats and others probably late war 1944 onwards. Plenty info on the Mk1 version fitted to the  earlier boats and the Fairmile A. Thanks

Any help?

The Royal Navy's guns were made under licence at Elswick.
Reading John Lambert suggests that the guns were the same, just the mounting varied.

Thanks for the reply Jonty I have a copy of the excellent Allied Coastal Forces of WW2 which has the same drawing of the Mk1 and shows both profiles but unfortunately only one profile for the Mk V mounting which is the one I wanted more detail for with a view of getting it 3D printed.
Interesting about Elswick might be more information down that route :-))

This is from an American source but it may be the same pattern.

Thanks very much Tony that has filled in some more of the blanks and will enable me to fashion something from scratch.

There used to be one at Woolwich arsenal, but I don't know if it is still there,  you could try the IWM.

The recent British Naval Weapons of WW2 Vol III Coastal Forces Weapons from the John Lambert collection has 2 pages of drawings mainly of the Mk1, 1* and VI versions but does have a side and rear view of the Mk V.  I will pm a shot.

Try getting in touch with Explosion, the museum of naval firepower in Gosport. They may have the details you need.

Or maybe also try Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill which is part of the Royal Armouries. They specialise in Naval weapons. I can't remember seeing a modern Hotchkiss there but they have one of the old 6pdrs on display.

Thanks Colin Ive got a selection of pictures from a visit to Fort Nelson but don't think there is a 3 pounder amongst their collection.
