Armed Tramp Steamer
« on: February 17, 2021, 10:36:41 pm »

I found a model of an armed Tramp Steamer in the Internet.
Would this be a possible configuration for a Ship like this or would this be unrealistic ? I would be use Deans Marine Melanie. Here is the Link

It's a little bit heavily armed for a merchantman, most had one stern gun and 2-4 AA pieces.  One thing you could add is a lot of liferafts on angled platforms, ready to be released at a moment's notice.

Depends whether Tobi wants a Q ship or not. If you make a search for Harold Auten VC or Suffolk Coast you'll find more film/photo archives. Suffolk Coast ended up as an exhibit travelling round the country post-war to show what a Q ship was all about. It's a case of deciding whether a Q ship per se is a disguised raider, such as Kormoran or Pinguin etc or a disguised u-boat enticement, which was the RN original WW1 purpose. To that end you even had a trawler disguised as a downed airship or towing an RN sub which would counter attack an attacking u-boat.If you read Patrick Campbell VC's book, his tramp carried up to 6 guns plus d/c's and torpedo tubes, all hidden away from a cursory inspection. This was especially necessary when in the Channel approaches or the Atlantic because home port could be Queensferry which was known as a hostile location in Ireland. Repairs, coaling, re-arming etc. had to be done by the crew, simply because of the lack of trust in the locals. If I remember correctly he ended up with a crew of over 80 at one stage. It's a great but dated read.

I mentioned the raider Pinguin. She was a bit bigger than Melanie but the original plans are here and they may give a better idea.   http://dreadnoughtproject.org/plans/KM_Pinguin_1939/

This vessel was a Naval armament vessel, she probably was fitted with a 12pdr gun aft, but she was quitely heavily armed to commercial vessels. Have had a quick look through my copy of "Coasters go to war" and as previously mention a small gun mounting aft for a 6/12pdr possibly light a/a on the bridge wings. But the book does give a lot of old coasters pre and after the war, to get a feel for vessel type. Hope you succeed and put it on this site, would love to see it a change from the usual.

Good luck with Shapeways but I think you may have to make it yourself. Sorry!

Remember an old master mariner lecturer reminiscing about early defensive weapons fitted early in the war, apart from old WW1 machine guns, he mentioned a system which was a rocket fired vertically in front of a plane, attached was a wire which had a grenade fitted on the end. Apparently the idea was as the plane flew on the wire went over the wing edge and the grenade was supposed to detonate by the wing, he shrugged his shoulders and said one of the many funny things dreamed up at the start of the war.

Yes, they were known as PAC rockets and pretty useless, quite a bit of information online such as this:
