Revell 1/16 VW samba bus conversion
« on: February 20, 2021, 07:53:57 pm »

Hi all this was donated to me by a friend(he was doing it as a van) I have other plans for it, it will be a very rare custom made version (the guys at work will know where I'm going with it as we have the actual vehicle in the workshop)

More work done to this, that is the basic shape of the vehicle a few doors to add and lots of details to the bed to add.

Hi all this is what I'm aiming for, it has a very unusuall way of loading cars (which i am ambitiously aiming to depict)

I need to make lots of louvers for the samba bus conversion so heres my simple answer, glue bade to base at half the thickness of a cocktail stick run that through blade then turn the resulting halves 180° and run through aginn all I have to do now is round the ends off and I have my louvres.

It's going to be to be one very light car!  My '59 Microbus was only rated for a 1750 pound load.  Open wheel racer maybe?

Or maybe you're putting a custom tube frame under it?

Hi don it was a custom built truck specifically for carrying race cars.
Tried making the louvers out of quartered cocktail sticks, not very successful
I measured the louvers and they are 20mm wide the quarterd cocktail sticks are 1 1/4 mm so way out of scale.

I have another idea up my sleeve let's see how that works.

This one really tickled my fancy, it's similar to one of my "bucket list" projects.  My first car was a '59 23 window Microbus, wish I'd never gotten rid of it now.  If I only knew THEN what I know now.  I keep telling myself someday I'm gonna build me a mid-engine pickup out of a clapped out shell of a VW bus - but it's GOTTA be a split-windshield.  I've even invested in a couple of 1/24 sale models of the donor vehicles, and when the urge strikes me I work on the drawings to be sure it can be done.  (So far it looks doable.)

At one time I had planned on building a mid-engine V6 into a shortened bus, I even started building a model of it.  Everything was looking good until I had to take 6 scale inches out of each of the bucket seats to get them to fit beside the engine.  I gave that idea up since it would be kind of hard to take 6 inches out of the width of my butt.

The latest version will use a 1.6L I4, actually it's the engine out my '73 Datsun pickup, but that's another story.

That's quite the oil cooler they've got there.  Sure beats the crap outa the old tower unit they used to have stuck in the cooling tins.

I don't remember if you told us already, but what did they have in that thing for an engine?

Well this arrived for the samba bus conversion, fair bit of bodywork modification needed (doing it as the cafe mexicano version) made a start on the modifications. The kit itself looks really good all the molding is very crisp and sharp and detail looks well defined.

Hi all tried a mock up of loading the car, obviously didn't tie it up well enough, bit peed off the wheels don't turn on the car as its loaded (I wonder if it's not heavy enough they turn freely by hand)I think the speed is about right.
The cab is a bit wonky will need to work on that
