I remember going to a big model show in England on our first visit there, way back in 1993. I think it was called Wings and Wheels, but I could be wrong. It was at Sandown Racecourse. A landing strip for RC aircraft, made from plywood, or similar, sheets, was laid on the track near the finishing post, as the grass was too long for the models. It was a massive show, attracting thousands of visitors, and featured many modelling disciplines, including boats, aircraft, and railways.

That sounds like Sandown Model show, which started in the mid seventies and finished about fifteen years ago. It was organised by the Elmbridge Model Club. It got smaller over the years.

Yes, that’s very likely it, there were all kinds of models there. It was the biggest model show I have ever seen.

Sandown used to be great in the 80s. I used to help out for a few years on 308s stand with Richard and Jamie nichols. As said Elmbridge used to run it, but it was then sold onto someone else to run, when i last went to one there, it was all craft stands etc and hardly any rc model stands, it had shrunk to about 1/3 the size.

Hi
Elmbridge sold it to Argus Exhibitions, some said for £1.00 on the under standing that they could have it back for free as and when Argus gave it up.

Argus morphed into Nexus, but the last Sandown show which was I think 2006, or perhaps 2007, was run by Traplet, who took that show on for its final year. It was poorly advertised at short notice and consequentially poorly attended. Traplet have since folded as many will remember.

There did seem to be a motivation to noticeably scale down some model exhibitions from the 1990's onwards. The original Model Engineering Exhibition seemed to gradually diminish in size and scope. It pivoted away from the now demolished Wembley Conference Centre, first to Alexandra Palace, then to Olympia, back to Ally Pally, finally to Ascot and Sandown race courses where the focus was solely on very high end model engineering.

I'm not sure what motivated this, money, risk or a lack of enthusiasm from the organisers, probably a combination of all three.

Having said all that many shows still exist, and some replacements came onto the scene. Wings and Wheels is one, and they put up an excellent pool, which is underused IMO.

There is the Southern Model Air Show, a bit of a misnomer IMO as the show encompasses all aspects of the R/C hobby.

There is also the London Model Engineering exhibition (assuming it returns at some point, hopefully 2022) and smaller regional shows like the St Albums exhibition which is well worth attending.

Just got a reply back about this show. No tent or tables this year. They require you supply your own.
Boat pool still there.
If there is enough definite interest on here, i willing to organise it. We would need to supply tables and gazebos. I WOULD ALSO STAY onsite for the weekend. Any takers??? If interest is shown pm me and i will open up a seperate thread

I distinctly remember going to a model exhibition at the Seymour Halls in Seymour Place London, it was late 60's or early 70's.
Does anyone remember anything about that one?

That was the Model Engineering exhibition I mentioned in my earlier post. It moved to Wembley Conference Centre in 1977 when the building was brand new. It's been demolished for several years now as part of the renewal work- Wembley Park area has become almost unrecognisable with huge development still ongoing.

i'm thinking of going to wings & wheels for the first time this year:

A quick question - is it worth planning to spend 2 days there, or is 1 day enough?

i realise it depends on interests etc, but would be interested to hear comments - thanks.

It's a really good show with lots of different types of models on display.

Saturday evening is normally good so if I was going for one day it would be Saturday and reckon on getting home very late but I normally go for both days & camp on site. Not sure about this year yet as we are seeing how Covid numbers develop.

The other thing is that a lot of distributors shift a lot of slow moving / returned as faulty etc stock at great prices. It goes Saturday.

A Great day out, great weather, new show layout and much better organiaation / parking etc.
.... Tall Andy even let me have a go of someone else's boat!

Breaking News:
1. I didn't sink it,
2. Didn't tangle it up in something,
3. Hit anyone else.
4. Docked it alongside quite well I thought!
