Harwich ferry no 1
« on: March 04, 2021, 10:59:22 am »

Hi guys, does anyone out there know what the pre war railway colours of the Harwich/ Zeebrugge ferry were?
I have the book rails across the sea but there is no reference to the railway colours before being taken over
by the admiralty.
I am building the model at 1/480 scale N gauge and finding it difficult to source military vehicles at that scale
so I decided to change to the civilian/railway version. That is why I require the colour scheme from grey.
Thanks for looking.

John

I'm assuming LNER standard colours.

I seem to recall a pictuire posted shortly after launch of one of the train ferrys, it was in a previous build thread on the subject

Hi.  Can't help with colours but at 1:480 that should be T gauge(?), and last time I looked anyway that was still a very niche scale.  If it is N gauge your meaning I'm sure there's a spread of military vehicles.  I would have seen them on ngaugeforum but they've turned it secret now so no way to look in again to try and remember where they came from.

I have made inquiries with the ferry oracle, he will know if anyone does, I will let you know when he answers. if its about ferries he has the book, well half the books on ferries have a few of his pictures at least.

Out of interest I had a "quick" look in the National Archives entries and if you REALLY want to search, there's loads of stuff, most of it ......interesting if you want to know about wages for firemen on a Sunday! But, Ref RAIL390/305 is the comittee record of adopting a new house flag and keeping the existing colour scheme on the Harwich/Zebrugge ferry. Dated somewhere between 1923 and 1932.Judging by the attached and the poster it was just black/white with LNER ochre funnels and vents but others will know a lot more than me. Still, it's fun looking :-))

Thanks Tony,Grendel that’s the info I required. On some posters the hull looked dark blue and just didn’t look
right. Do you know if the fouling paint was red oxide?

Thanks

The artist was probably introducing some shading and counter-shading.  A plain black would just have been a big flat blob on the poster.
There are probably only mono photos and no remaining eye witnesses, so if red anti fouling looks right, red it can be.

Hi John,
Probably a very daft question but if you're building for a layout, since you use N gauge as the scale, you're unlikely to see the bottom, only the white boot topping :D

Hi TonyH

From my photo collection of the TF’s they didn’t have any boot toppings for the waterline- it went straight from anti fouling to the main colour of the hull. I’ve noticed a lot of vessels of this era are the same. When my Dad and I built ours we studied the dazzle paint scheme on the real vessels with Sandy Barclay but couldn’t distinguish a waterline topping.
Can wait to see the mini TF on the water though, ours is going through a mini refit at the moment ready for some new railway rolling stock.

Thanks for your help guys :-)) i have sorted what I am going to do, I have “at last “found military trucks
tanks, jeeps, motorbikes with sidecars at N gauge from a company called Hattons.
The colour will remain grey possibly with camouflage, but on that boats in camouflage tend to get damaged
on our lake with some members with fast boats who say sorry I didn’t see it in time.
I will ask a member to post a photo of the boat on here for me when it’s finished.I don’t have a computer
I use my iPad.
Once again thanks for your help

Hi Nick, the boat if coming along slowly as I have to scratch build most of the parts,I new this at the
start but didn’t deter me.I am enjoying the build.I should have gone for a larger scale at 1/148 is fiddly
But will be worth it in the end, easier to carry and launch.

Hi Nick, I only mentioned the boot topping because the pic I posted earlier suggests the contrast between the black of the main hull and the colour where it hits the water seemed rather distinct. Certainly in camo the boot topping would be disposed of.
Hope all is well,
Tony

Hi Tony

No problem just wanted to make sure.
I’m okay, a bit cold as I’m living in a HAS at Leuchars as part of an Exercise I’ve been volunteered for! Only 10 days to go and I can come home again.
Hope you’re keeping well.

Hi Nick,
Glad you're enjoying the frozen north for a change!
All OK with us thanks. Just keeping relatively sane in the shed comparing/contrasting with Bob Zooma in the powerboat stakes and finishing Project X for Mayhem..... %)
Adieu
