John Hemmens Formidable LT100 with steam engine valuation
« on: March 10, 2021, 07:17:58 pm »

Hi there, I'm currently trying to find some information on the value of a model steamboat and maybe a place to try and sell it. The boat belonged to my mum's partner who sadly passed away seven years ago.  The boat was built over two years by himself from a John Hemmens plank on frame kit, the boat is a Formidable LT100 fitted with a Richmond steam plant, Ribblesdale boiler, steam oil seperator and refillable gas tank and has the boiler certificate.  the boat also has a Futaba T6EX FASST Transmitter with R617FS Receiver.  This boat was his pride and joy and as such my mum is hoping to sell it on to someone who will get the same pleasure from it, she knows the price he payed for it but is unsure of its worth.  I am contacting various model boat clubs to try and find information and hopefully some ideas of where would be a good place to put it up for sale.  I will attach some pictures and would appreciate any information that could help. Kind regards Dean

Contact an auction House such as Christie’s Christie's Auctions & Private Sales | Fine Art, Antiques, Jewelry & More or Maritime Auctions | Adam Partridge Auctioneers or a reputable one near you for advice. But don’t expect any figure to be come close to what he paid for the kit; it all depends on how much someone wants to pay for it on the day.

LB is right, amateur built model boats, and especially kits don't command high prices these days and the top end auctioneers don't tend to take them. You might actually do better on EBay where there are more potential customers who will at least recognise the value of the steam plant. General auctions tend not to have enough bidders to keep prices up.

Charles Miller Auctions specialise in maritime items but I'm told they are a bit picky on what they will accept. Still might be worth contacting them though.
