Billing Boats Hoga no. 708
« on: March 18, 2021, 05:32:21 pm »

This is a static display model but I hope to modify it for the necessary.
I didn't realise how small this was going to be  {-)  so it shouldn't take too long.

Today I've ordered a 50mm RH 3 blade prop and a 211mm Raboesch waterproof prop shaft maintenance free.

I'm just going to start a photo gallery then I'll be back.

This is one of very few Billing kits still in stock during COVID Current price at CMB £179.99

This is one I bought off Stan. According to the general arrangement drawing was first released in 2002 and likely one of the very first laser cut kits. I doubt anything has changed other than the box design.

Today I assembled the keel frames and deck and made provision for a 6mm prop tube

Many more pictures in the Gallery for those interested

Nicely done thank you  O0

Stan too has given me some photos

My Facebook friend Marco Zee has sent me many dozens of photos today also, he did a lot of research before building his static model.

I hope you don't mind Marco

The rudder bearings fitted.

The rudder assembly.

The frames shaped

I can do several planks whilst waiting for internal parts.

I use spacers and lead weights to ensure there is no twist in the deck.

The prop tube in this picture is a temporary one dry fitted.

Additionally important is a straight edge to keep the keel straight.

Just like with the Boulogne Etaples the shaping of the planks is not important for appearance as the hull will be dressed with glass and resin before painting.
So long as it is completely smooth and no gaps I'm satisfied.

Thanks boss.

CMB did well this week with delivery  :-))

Raboesch shaft arrived and fitted.

My home made long couplings ensure perfect alignment

More planks fitted.

I'm now making the motor platform to fit the motor. I don't do wobbly drivetrains

More efficient. I would not use anything else these days.
Six of my last builds use brushless.

Motor is now epoxied in on 2mm paxolin, mount is drilled and tapped for easy removal. Upstand for cabin fitted and magnets to hold cabin in place.

Planking continues but tomorrow I need to sort the tiller.

Those planks look better quality than the rubbish that was in my last Billings kit. Nice planking so far.

Thank you both. I think planking has always been a bit pot luck in the past. The new owners with their new factory should see some significant improvement.
Really its on the models the have exposed wood that need the very best quality. Mine so far are glass over models so nothing is seen in the end.

Lots of air added today and a route for a tiller servo rod. However I now find I don't have any rods so I expect ModelShopLeeds will delivery by Tuesday.

Continuing to fit as many planks as I can without impeding accesss yet.

I fit my full planks first and then overlap and trim back for the next.

I must have bought a good kit way back in early 2000 timber looks good. Brings back memories of my visit to Pearl and the Arizona museum/memorial.

I had a hectic day so not much done.
I assembled the wheelhouse and made the roof demountable. The sun visor was a fiddle but the very thin ply bent without the need for wetting etc.
The funnel also is removable.
The inside of the hull was prepped with dilute resin.

I found a picture of Hoga being lifted onto a transporter. Apart from the thousands of barnacles I noticed what looks like a 4 blade propeller. I have 3 and 4 in stock but now I'm torn  %%

Spring has sprung creating lots of competition for ones time.

However there is progress if a little slower. I'm now approaching hull closure as planking from the deck downwards and from the keel upwards converge.
If this was a bare plank model like those sailing warships of old then what I am doing must be ignored  {-)

As this is a cover all with glass cloth and resin model then the planking pattern is of no consequence as long as the desired shape is maintained. So as my planks converge they will be overlaid and marked for cutting back previously laid planks so the new ones fit in.

Of note*
This is identified by Billing as "advanced beginner* so how hard can it be? Just requires confidence

Hull is now closed and fully resin coated inside.

Now rough sanding of the outside in progress to remove all the high spots. After a full resin coat any low spots will be filled before covering in glass cloth.
Starboard done

Model Shop Leeds have click and collect so I'm calling for supplies in the morning.

Morning Andy,

Another lovely build and out of curiosity, are the frames what I call traditional ply or liteply?

regards

I don’t know without a comparison. It’s not heavy but neither is it designed to be light as it’s a static display model. Thank you Ant

Thanks Andy. I thought I'd ask as I've been using Liteply to fabricate the cabin frames on my Damen build. I've never used it before in a boat build, but it is one of the materials I always go to when I build my planes. So I have shed loads of it around house :).
