Port side coated this morning.

I found that after sanding the resin coat I could not find sufficient excuse to break out the filler  8)

So its now ready for glass cloth when I have time.
To finish the day I fitted the deck level rubbing strake, shaped it and resin coated it and the deck. This will fill the grain ready for sanding.

Lovely work!! Saved some money on the filler then, almost a shame to hide this behind paint.

Thank you Hama  :-)

Not much today.
I fitted a strip of walnut around the edge of the upper deck (not in the kit)
Also ordered 1mm brass rod by the metre as the bits in the kit are too short for continuous hand railing.
Some other fittings assembled. There are no port/starboard navigation lights in this kit either, very odd.
Maybe get some cloth on the hull tomorrow.

Hmm, that is odd - can't see them on the box art either, nor on the instructions manual photo  :((

A very nicely done build. In regard to te forward nav lights. Navsource shows her sister Montezuma, YT-145, clearly carrying side lights, here:http://www.navsource.org/archives/14/140814503.jpg
In that they were built at the same yard, at the same time, I suspect that Hoga also carried side lights rather than the single forward nav light.

Yes there should be nav lights but it's not a big hurdle to overcome. Thank You  :-))

First side trimmed and sanded

Starboard away

Most excess resin is skimmed off with a credit card before it's too hard. Saves on finish sanding.

Did you put resin on first then lay the cloth on top or the other way round?
Did you fit the strip around the deck after glassing?
That's a large bend on the walnut strip around the stern too, what method did you use for that.
I'm full of questions as I'm about to do similar operations on my whaleback this weekend.

The hull was all resin coated and sanded some days ago.
Today glass cloth was tacked in place with ca then resin coated again.
Strip around the deck was fixed with ca to the first resin coat.
The strip around the stern is not a strip but four pieces of laser cut plywood so no bending

Thank you. That's not what I expected! One coat followed by the cloth with a second coat.

How I build is not the bible Nord you could just as well put the cloth on bare wood and resin it but for me the first coat does a lot of filling and levelling as well as giving a stronger job in the end.  :-))

Agree. I get that. Just never thought of that sequence, with two coats.
I did buy a spray adhesive to hold the cloth in place this time.

Bending strips etc I find quite challenging even after soaking the timbers. I use a profile of nails/pins on a board.

Another lovely build there Andy it has a very nice shape to the hull.  I honestly don't know how you have so many builds on the go at once.  But not only that you do them all the justice without compromising any of them.  I wish I could multitask like that but I can't and I admire the way you can pick up and put down builds with what seems like no interruption in the proceedings.  Looking forward to the finished boat its going to be another beauty  :-))

Nordlys - I just put the cloth on with a 1" roller dipped in epoxy.  Its one of those jobs which is easier to do than explain.

Yes, thanks Mark. It's a messy process, sometimes it goes well though.

Aah well I have repeatedly tried the one project at a time Mark and failed miserably  :embarrassed:
Thanks for the compliments  :-)

Being surrounded by part built models isn't so bad I just wish I had more space  {-)

Last night I began the bulwarks. The ribs may all look alike but they are quite different and must be located exactly as the instructions.

There's more pictures in the gallery for those interested.

Thank you I agree about a like tab. It works fine on Facebook and allows a show of appreciation without a need to make a post.
I don’t think Martin is keen on the idea

Would be a very good addition  :-))

I’ve just discovered that the cabin assembly is designed wrong by Billing
They have made the cabin roof parallel to the deck making it too high at the front.
The side elevation of the general arrangement clearly shows 5mm difference between stern and bow and that is a lot at 1:50  %%

Thank you Kevin.

This is after major surgery but it is not taking long to modify, just reassembling the under side now.
I'll post later with how to do it.

Re: Billing Boats Hoga no. 708 Cabin correction
« Reply #48 on: April 03, 2021, 01:19:38 pm »

This picture illustrates how the cabin should be so that all vertical lines are at 90 degrees to the water line. See I marked 40mm at the rear and 35mm at the front in pencil.

I had to think how could I mark a line for cutting? The easy solution was to pack up the rear by 5mm and then use a 5mm strip to mark a line 5mm off the deck to the front.

I wanted to preserve the parts to reuse

Then a pull saw to take out the front floor.

Planed the sides to the new line

All done and recoated in resin.

I think its beer o'Clock
