M5 Stuart tank 1/6(21st Century Toys)in my case
« on: March 20, 2021, 10:32:29 am »

Hi all;
I have been enjoying this tank for many many years so far together with many many modifications to it up to now.
As this is made from ABS plastic so that modification works were comparatively easy to do and worth doing
 as this was large enough to accept such modifications. O0
Shown below are the present  status of the tank model.(Pic No1&No2;Original tank configurations)
The pics were taken at my local lake where I am normally enjoying to run RC ships and boat models. %%

Hi all the RC model tankers;
Let me show you my way of major conversions of the M5 Stuart RC tank into a more enjoyable one ,which are
only a few examples of what I did to the tank. :embarrassed: %) ;)
1;Both hatches were cut out for an easy  maintenance and use of switching the power easily on the field. %)
2;Opened here for switching the power
3/4;Largely ,essentially modified inside for enjoying more powerful and enjoyable mechanisms. %% {-)
5;Battery  compartment for a sealed lead 12V7Ah and a Tamiya sound speaker on right.
6;A smoke generator with a blower for exhausting.
7;The hatch for feeding 6mmBB rounds which I can enjoy the shooting in my hobby room when I could be
leisured sometimes. {-) %% ;)
8;The smoke test in my hobby room...some may say it's to much! Surely yes, but only in the room!
  It becomes soon thinner outdoors and spread by the wind normally.!
How have you done and been enjoying the conversions of this tank?? :-)

Hi RC model tankers;

1;A US Army infantry or a marine..."Well,then I'll show you my tank in detail from today,first of all, motorised gun barrel elevation by Tamiya parts."
2/6; "Pics 2 through 6 are the mechanisms so simply designed and built by Backerther as if even elementary school
children could do that level !!" {-) %% O0 :embarrassed: ;D

The soldier looks so pitiful as his legs are soooo cramped in the turret.... %% {-)

Hi all the RC model tankers;
The tank can elevate the gun barrel up to 13 degree up and 5 degree down currently and these are
the maximum to both sides due to its construction and shape of the gun-shield.

Hi all the RC model tankers ;
I cut out the stand of a 12V7Ah shield battery to get a space for a simulated  exhaust smoke generator
with a blower. It was rather troublesome to scoop the thick plastic stand(compartment)out in the rear of the chassis.
However,with this work,I could enlarge a wide space to install many components as seen in the pics below.
1;Original layout by the manufacturer..large bur narrow to set RC components in earnest. {:-{
2;A smoke generator with a blower
3/4;The latest layout using the sufficiently wide space.! %%

Hi all the RC model tankers;
Today is the work of removing a 12V7Ah sealed battery compartment of the upper hull.
This part is completely needless,needles to say, {-) for me in the sense to make a better RC model
and easy maintenance in the field operations  as well.
However the compartment wall is about 4mm thick so that the work took much time to finish beyond my
previous expectation, and what is worse ,narrow to work where is reverse side of the hull... {:-{
But the fruits of the work is worth doing as well as precious for a field maintenance. %% O0 ♪~♬~♫~(^^♪
1;The battery compartment is seen right above in the pic.This is sturdily done.... {:-{
2/3;Under cutting out... :((
4;Finished the work like this %%
5/6;Reshaped
7;The fruits !...a good access into the mechanism room! %%
  This parts is moreover modified later to get a better access into the main battery floor at mid-chassis.

Hi all the RC model tankers;
Today's pics are of what I call miscellaneous goods box attached to the rear of the tank as shown below.
I do not know how they normally call it in the English military terms, but we call it above designation in Japanese
concept. Anyhow,I made it so simply to add more scale realism because the real box was thought to be made
and attached in the fields not as US formal equipment as been done in the arsenals or the tank factories.
My style of box could possibly be seen in the  battle fields somewhere as this is simple enough to make ... {-) %% O0

My M5 Stuart tank is running about comfortably under the cherry trees a little after full bloom in the last pic. {-) %% ♫~♪~♬~
I watched the TV tonight broadcasting the people somewhere in UK enjoying the cherry blossom with small groups
in the park due to covid-19 to which NHK said the countermeasures have come to work well steadily and gradually. :-))
On the contrary,we are entering into vicious cycles by both poor leaders and the peoples not to follow the rules strictly.. >>:-( >:-o {:-{

Hi eddiesolo;
I am so sorry to have been so late replying to your comment and good advice,as I have been in Penny lane!
not in Liverpool ,but in Nasu highlands to visit a famous bakery which owner is a so crazy about the Beatles.
See Pic1;After purchasing some delicious breads,we took a pic in the same pose as the Beatles in the back
in commemoration. {-) %% ;D

Well, back to the subject;
I also think it better to apply artificially some weathering with some paints to get a scale realism. O0
I also do  expect natural weathering by mud, scratches,some damages to the hull,oil stains,repaint work for a repair
  by actually running frequently in the fields.

Thank you for your comment again. :-)

I suppose they may be un-used cartridges...since the projectiles are attached to the cases yet...

Thanks for your comment !! %%

I am just trying to make a kind of air of the tank in the front lines of battle field.
And I imagine something strange or contradictory possibly could be seen in some battle fields under fierce combat. O0

Hi RC model tankers;
In the next place,I refurbished the upper rollers which did not roll smoothly by the tracks in my case.
This is I suppose partly due to the design and changed the form simply as seen in the pics nearly the same
as real ones.The result was quite OK...rolling well enough! %% O0 that will lead to smooth running on the terrain as well. O0
1/2/3;Original form
4;Refurbished using the same parts,just re-assembled!!
5;Reshaped with putty
6;Attached to the support,still needs some work on it to resemble in shape .. ;D
7;The sample pic as my work basis.But I don't intend to care soooo much about this kind of so minute details ..
 but more to follow.. {-)

as you may guess the gap between the rollers is to guide the teeth of the track, what you have done means that the track could move outside of the body and foul the front and rear sprockets and damage them, would not increasing the gap have solved the issue?

Hi warspite;

Thank you again for your comment!
I know that quite well about the gap function.
Please pay attention to the pic of the real tank! %) By this modification,smooth rolling could be done in addition
to better appearance like seen in the real form. O0
Moreover as I mentioned in the last posting, I do not care sooo deeply about appearance rather than essential function
of running RC model outdoors.

This boat below is semi-scale but runs quite well even in the so wavy lake in the winter.
I suppose you may easily imagine how windy it is by the pics and tri-angled fierce waves standing all around the boat.

I am intending or seeking to fulfil this kind of quality or function in my RC models.! %%

Thank you for your comment this time too.!

Hi all;
Today,s theme of my modification to the tank went to the most important part as a running RC model...
Yes,the original driving mechanism was fully replaced with this system as seen below. %%
Why I replaced the system was just to improve the running speed and more powerful maneuvers on the field.
See the original system for instance.The motor is powerful 540 class, but gears were rather weak and slow ratio
for the 11kg tank to run a long range and grassy fields.

With these 540 class geared motors,the speed and maneuverability were both greatly improved,especially on
the grassy fields where RC model tanks are normally not good at cruising well enough.
The RC model tanks I THINK should run powerfully like the real tanks.! %) O0 %%
1/2;Original conditions
3/4;After largely improved! %%

Hi RC model tankers;
This tank has run for many hours so far in many places so that road wheels had also worn out  in their axle holes.
In another words,the holes have become so larger than ever that the wheels are rotating eccentrically which you may
easily imagine how the wheels do.
So I challenged to repair the parts in my simple idea of solution.
I have not thought to repair them fundamentally in very serious and essential idea as this tank is a kind of toy grade,
which I do not think it necessary to apply such essential methods to the tank. O0 O0 And I don't know how long I will
use the tank outsides for the time to come as well...Simple repair will do for me as I am so aged... %%
1;I removed the bogies from the hull..
2;And disassembled..
3;And made the bearings simply with the aluminum tubes
4:And I enlarged the worn holes up to the 12mm diameter to accept the bearings.
  Left wheel is with an enlarged hole and right another worn-out hole before enlarging.
 This work was comparatively difficult for me to do as precisely as possible without eccentricity... {:-{ {:-{

to be continued..

Hi RC model tankers;
In the next place,I inserted the bearings into the enlarged holes of road wheels as shown.
The work is complete except re-assemblies of the road wheels.
1;Left is the road wheel inserted with a bearing and right not yet inserted.
2;Both wheels with the bearings
3;0.2mm shims cut out to be used around the shafts of the wheels
4;Re-assembling the wheels
5;Under a cheery tree after being out of blossom.

A difficult task to get rid of the eccentricity! If it was me I would end up with a lovely 12mm hole off-centre  >>:-(

Hi Stuw;

I purchased this table drill when I needed simply at least to make this overall length 1.5m,1/6 RCed German Panther tank made mainly from 0.8mm steel.Without this drill I could not complete my work of steel-made tank model.... O0
This was the only reason I got this drill.  ;)
A video of this tank can been seen taken at a certain military show hall.

Hi SteamboatPhil;

Thanks a lot.! %%

Pics were taken at Shizuoka hobby show.
The US Army M4 Sherman tank in the pics of the show is also  RCed 1/6.

The last pic of the Sherman tank is the PR image of the modellers' exhibition held at the annex to the main hall of the show. %%
The description refers to as mainly the followings;
" The world's largest level of joint exhibition of the modellers' clubs works "in capital letters...
" About over 7800 pieces of works are supposed to exhibit from the 226 model clubs all over Japan"in small letters.

Hi RC model tankers;
In the next place,I added a smoke generator as seen below.
The location of these exhaust pipes is the first among three different locations tried to this tank.
But, smoke itself is sufficiently exhausted from the pipes as seen in the pics, gehho gehho,gehho oh too smoky!!.  %%
