Miranda - Cylinders - steam passageways Frustration ??? !!!
« on: March 20, 2021, 05:27:22 pm »

I am in the process of building a Miranda steam engine. All is/was going well with good progress, however, today I attempted the drilling of the angled (steam passageway) holes from the top of the cylinders to meet the pre drilled hole on the cylinder plate. Well that resulted in 2 ruined cylinders !!!!  >:-o  I could not get the angle right  to meet with the pre drilled holes <:( . There is no indication of angle on the plan, it is obviously a very critical stage of the build and ultimately the operation of the engine but appears 'guess work' to get it right.

Now in the process of machining 2 more cylinders

Can anyone assist please as to how they achieved this 1/16" drilling operation

Thanks in advance

I did it by sighting from the drill bit to the hole in the port face. Just old suck it n see just guess I got lucky. That was nigh on 30 years past.
If I was doing it now I would drill a hole vertically down the cylinder to meet up with the port face hole and then counter bore it to allow steam into the cylinder
You could do a bit of trig to calc the angle of dangle

I thought the  miranda engine was a oscillating engine?

Hi Clive,
I did capture the Miranda on CAD just for fun, the angle is 30deg.

Thank Goodness I didn't completely screw that up...
I checked the drawings and found the error of my ways...

Just as a thought, if you took some brass rod which was a fine fit into the cylinder bores could you practice drilling through the rod first to get the angle right then use the rod as a jig inside the cylinders, this would also stop the drill from slipping. Maybe even chamfer the top of the rod such you are starting to drill at a right angle.

You can then adjust the rod to be exactly in the right position. Hope that may be of help

Cheers

Thanks again to all

I chose the option of drilling vertically down parallel to the bore then counter bored to allow steam into the cylinder.

I could not face 'judging it by eye' and making more cylinders if it went wrong again !!

All good now for the next stage  :-)

Hi Is this the Miranda - Basil Hartley twin cylinder oscillating engine that you are building? I got this one last week, it was made by a great model engineer about 30 years ago and never used,  it runs beautifully. https://youtu.be/j1e8C8lp2xg

Bonjour David,
Nice little machine which runs quite well  :-))
My concern would be the mix aluminium/brass bronze, which, based on my experience can undergo electrolytic corrosion effects after a while.
