They’re both cargo vessels yes
Similar ? No I'd say there are more differences than similarities especially with the construction method and materials besides the appearance.
There’s pictures on page one Stan

A bit further.

As this approaches closure I'm of the opinion that the last 20mm or so of the bow tip will be best done with a balsa block. There is nothing to gain by struggling with this.

Just one little plank yet to fit before finishing with a block of balsa.

Then the sanding can begin leading to a cover of glass cloth.

I've done the two large wash ports and will probably pilot drill the long ones before the resin coat.

Continued last night so now ready for a pencil rub over and course sanding of all the high spots. Then we'll see if any filler is required.

I think if we manage to get this kit back into production I will recommend a taller balsa block at the bow similar to the smit Rotterdam construction.
I should have decided sooner to do this.

Bill mentioned the well deck yesterday and it made me think what is the idea behind the need for one?

Hi!
You're doing a great job as usual and I'm following with great interest.
About the well, I'd say it's the designers intention to maximize the cargo capacity on a minimum size given the specific regulations to measure the size of a cargovessel at that time. Size matters when it comes to port fairs, manning and such.
Others may correct me on this, but it's my guess.
All the best!

Hi Andy, going along with Hama. These little cargo boats evolved to the tasks they had to do. Getting into "non- ports", jetties and river that other vessels could not, lying in the mud at low tide and calls that had no facilities at all. Hence the Well deck to make cargo handling easier. bill

Andy, If you are serious about a kit make the hull in glass fibre. bill

I’m not making a kit Bill
Billing are with my help and it will still be plank on frame.

Thank you both for your thoughts on the well deck, makes sense  :-))

I thought you might like this that is printed in eight languages.
Very true, to be built not assembled.

Even with well cut parts it would still be necessary to adjust to fit.

I've gone to great lengths to get my printer scanner working so it scans to file and I've sent Billing a test email with a scan. If the reply is good I'll be forwarding scans of the keel, frames and deck next week.

Today was intended to be sanding but its rained almost all day so nothing happening.

Hull sanding day

The pencil aids identifying the low spots

A coat of PT40 then seals and hardens the wood. This will be sanded again and any remaining imperfections filled before a final coat and glass cloth.

Yes thanks Colin. I can understand why a moulded hull would be popular as this definitely requires a great deal
of confidence or advanced modelling skills.
I wonder where Billing will place it in the order of things 🤔 maybe I’ll put this to Jens as a suggestion but I won’t be making a plug myself  %%

I must leave this now until tomorrow and the resin is then easy to sand. Even though dry to the touch it’s very difficult to sand until rock hard.
Hopefully get some cloth on it late on Monday

Thanks for the mail Bill  :-))

I've now glued in the correct length rudder tube and trial fitted the rudder where it will be along with rudder shoe. After a bit of re shaping I definitely have room to change from 35 to 40 mm prop. What do you think?

Lovely job on the hull Andy it really looks great.  I think I would stay with the smaller prop as I think it will sail like my old Fairmount Alpine.  If I went too fast or if you like over its scale speed it would just get smothered by its own bow wave.

I agree, stick with the 35mm prop initially, as you say, you can always go a size up if necessary.

Try before I buy  :-)

Here's an example from a Dutch blog of how people have struggled, perfectly demonstrating how inappropriate the original mahogany parts were.

Working late I made and fitted one set of hatch coamings, a bit tricky setting them up at the right height and angles.
I also made an oversized bow gunwale to be trimmed to suit later.

Tomorrow I hope to re sand the hull and escape any need for filling before applying glass cloth to one side of the keel and hull.

Some ducking and diving but still moving forwards.
I managed to sand the hull. There are some very minor imperfections that will not need filling. The resin and glass finishing coat will cover them.
Finished the bow ribs and gunwale and other bits.
