My new speed steam boat project
« on: May 08, 2021, 08:06:49 pm »

Bonjour,

My previous boat having been badly beaten  :(( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysNQ-Prq8II, I embarked on a new steam speed project with improbable elements, a 60 year old Chris Craft hull rescued from the trash, a double burner Babcock boiler that weighs two arms and a very powerful speed machine, luckily.

Before : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRoPl6YDcc0&t=199s

Here is her first test: https://youtu.be/3PRPYb72uAU

I still have some work to do to get her maximum  ok2

Bonjour,
I have solved my loss of power issue by using the gas in its liquid phase  :-))
https://youtu.be/1TdwdAKIFKE
I have to find different propellers for the tests I can't wait to start !

Bonjour Phil,
Slide valve machines do not support high speed, it is just a single acting cylindric valve machine, stalled at 180°, which unfortunately implies dead points and a good management of the idle, the boat can't stop either.

Single acting because piston rods leak a lot also at high pressure, this is true of course for our models machines.

Wow what a glorious sound that makes, I hope you revisit the project, it would be such fun to see it running at speed.

Bonjour Yves,
What a boat, you should have persevered ! I am sure it would be very fast ! The hull is the best I would imagine for a speed boat.
The only point is that your boat would not be allowed to play with us as the Anton trophy rules limit the pressure to 8 bar and I already heard 15 during these teets. I see you chooze the flash steam option, the best for speed to my opinion.
You have finished beautiful boats, you can finis this one and perhaps exceed 30 km/h

Bonjour Calin,
It will be interesting especially because my friend Eric is also building one which seems very efficient... on the bench.
The competition will be fierce, especially as other vaporists also prepare their weapons  :-))
I hope I may go to the lake soon to test it

Bonjour,
My Scott boiler is too heavy, I have bought another one which is twice lighter and I hope as efficient :

Bonjour Calin,
Hope you are fine,
The 10 mm diameter tubes are mounted tightly in a helix over the entire length of the boiler, this is why the burner and the chimney are external, therefore, as it measures 200 mm and there is a small margin in front of the burner, I would say about fifteen without being able to check it firsthand

Not to confuse but looking at the boiler video it is not a Scott boiler it looks more like a centre flue

Raphaël

I am not sure you will need the gas heating via boiler warmth, as the Gas Tank is subject to such pulsations of nervous energy from the engine that the gas molecules must certainly be rubbing  %) with each other

Hello Raphael, when and where is the race going to be held?
Your new boat seems to have a strong steam plant, looks like a winner.

Bonjour,
Derek, using gas in its liquid phase is the best way to keep a constant pressure in the tank, I would not trust the vibrations of the engine to prevent the freeze as my boiler needs a lot of gas. A long heated pipe, a large filter prevent me to install a secondary line to start the heat, tis is good news and I thning I will repeat this on my other boats in which the gas tanks freeze.
Calin, The Anton Trophy races are usually run during the Atlantica Steam event or the Vap'IDF event. None of them were organized last year, you know why, and we hope that the next Atlantica Steam event will be organized during the last week-end of Seprember at Cabariot en Charente 17430, close to Rochefort and its royal rope factories.

Raphael the Diano Marina is coming along nicely it looked to be quite quick. The hull looks like a planing hull, if so it would probably give you a significant increase in speed if you can shift the weight as far back as possible, by putting the boiler further back along with the engine . If you can shift the weight back and get the bows up it will go a lot faster for no additional cost just a bit of weight re-distribution

Bonjour Dave,
You are absolutely right... in theory because the major problem is that this boat was built for a light electric engine, not a > 3 kilos steam plant.

Before these videos, thanks to my bathtub  ok2 I have tried to put the boiler at the aft of the boat but is is 20 cm long and a displacement of 10 cm did not change anything.

As you have perhaps noticed it, the 60 mm propeller is too steam consuming, the 70 mm one is better but belongs to my friend Eric so my next plan now is to test a 72 mm two blade propeller bouht in China, when it arrives...

Try 3 or 4 blades and of course, as large as possible. 2 blades are better suited for fast revving electric motors.
