There is usually a whole bunch of forgotten control keys across the top of the keyboard.  All have "self explanatory" symbols that someday I will understand.  On mine F2 dims, F3 brightens, f4 toggles between the output selections and f5 does something involving a screen.  Accidental pressing of any one can create lots of confusion. I don't know for sure, but these functions might only work for the native keyboard, not on a plugged-in one.
Look online for the manual - it may clear everything up.
