Hi I have tried the Molotow chrome pens. The fibre tip is ok for large areas but very difficult to use  on small parts and if I remember it did not take well to a varnish finish more info later in the week.

Stan.

I have used the Molotow Chrome paint pens too.
One job I did, was to re-chrome a pair of indicator/sidelight reflectors on front my 1964 Saab two stroke.

Both reflectors had completely lost pretty much all of the silver and were back to the plastic casting.
Initially I wasn't sure whether it would work and if it would produce enough of a shiny/reflective surface, but 2yrs on and they're still good with no tarnishing.

So, I can recommend these for certain jobs. The secret seemed to be, not going back over where you have already applied a covering of paint already and just passing back and fore, alongside the previous line each time.

HI Will totally agree use in one direction only going over the same area time and time again will result in a poor finish.

A question:

What sort preparation under the chrome pens.  Black?  Sanding first?

Thanks,Jim

Interesting video - the guy cracked open the pen and then spray painted with the content....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asT9s4uL-ag

In this video I crack open a Molotow Chrome Marker and pour the contents into my airbrush and spray a few spoons. I didn't know what would happen as I did it live on film for the first time. I was shocked to see how good it came out.

When I did the reflectors on my car, all I did was remove any of the remaining old reflector (not much) and give the surface a good clean to make sure it was free of grease etc.
I didn't sand the surface and would say all that you need is a smooth and grease free surface.

Well here goes  I have tried all sorts of chrome paints for my G/B build but I have to say most of them just looked like polished aluminium when applied.  So over the last few months it has been very much trial and error try this try that the shine going after a coat of varnish was applied or in some cases destroying the finish totally. I have tried enamel varnish and acrylic varnish over various finishes  all with the same result a dull surface I have tried the chrome pens but I feel they are quite cumbersome  and in my mind stripping them down for airbrush use will be very messy once again varnish used on the pen chrome is a problem. So were are we now while visiting my local model shop  I mentioned the problems I was having and I was introduced to a silver paint from Gild line early trials looked very good applied straight on to bare brass please note can not be used in your air brush.  Once again the enamel varnish destroyed the chrome finish so back to the drawing board this time using acrylic vanish no paint damage but a dull finish was the end result. With all this now driving me around the bend my solution was to apply the paint straight from the jar using a good quality brush applying the paint in one direction only this gave good results. I have decided not to apply any varnish and see how this goes over time. The smoother the surface the better the results will be. Over all I am very pleased with the finish obtained using guild line paint  but these notes are only for guidance and I have no wish to influence your choice of guild line products.

Hi Stan,
I looked the Guild Lane company up and found the product on ETSY over here in the US.
I think it still ships from the UK, but at least they will sell it.
I noticed that they have both Acrylic and Oil Based paints in Chrome and Silver.

Can you elaborate on which you have worked with.
Looks impressive.
You may have saved us all from the "Dreaded Fogging of the Silver Paint. "

Thanks,

just a word of warning if using guild line be aware it does not like greasy fingers it tends to distort the shine. Good luck with any projects that requires a chrome finish.

That's Interesting Stan. I was wondering whether polishing with a very light coat of wax and microfibre cloth might work or help longevity, but sounds like that is a bad idea!

I haven't got to the stage where I need to use it yet but the Guild Line Silver was recommended on another forum and is the one I intend using.

You can spray molotow just fine and it's not too licky about the surface finish you're using it over.

Lots of testing has been done and supposedly the best combo is liquid chrome and alclad aqua gloss klear.

I've not tested this yet but something I'm going to try when I revamp my Moonraker (again)
