1/12 scale Severn Lifeboat
« on: June 09, 2021, 10:25:40 am »

I am interested in building a Severn Class lifeboat and wondering if there are any kits available these days. My friend Brian Robert’s who sadly passed away a few years built one and it was a very impressive model indeed.

I have seen mouldings for the 1/12 scale SEVERN CLASS lifeboat advertised on eBay but don’t understand why the power specifies “brushless” motors. I have always used brushed motors in my previous models. Is it to do with the fact that it is a very big boat ?

For the same power output a brushless motor will be smaller than the equivalent brushed motor, the brushless is also more efficient so less input power converted to heat. Brushless outrunner motors generally provide more torque so can turn a larger propeller.  While brushed motors can be used you do have an inefficient lump wasting battery power (most brushed motors are still using ferrite magnets which are bulkier and much less powerfull than the Neodymium magnets used in brushless.)To some extend I suppose that is the same as choosing an old cast iron car motor or the modern aluminium castings of a modern motor. ould you rather have a much heavier iron lump in you car  or a more powerful lightweight engine  (classic car enthusiasts need not reply).

Thank you very much for your very helpful and clear explanation as to the difference between the two types of motor.
I have always wondered about the differences.

Can anybody let me know how to contact Tony who I understand is taking over the Speedline range of models.
I am very keen indeed to build a 1/12 scale SEVERN CLASS lifeboat and am struggling to find out how to go about acquiring the fittings and mouldings.
