Sailing boat external motor
« on: June 14, 2021, 06:08:21 pm »

Hi out there. I have a large wooden sailing boat 4 foot long. It would be nice if I could fit an external electric motor to the hull in case of an emergency. I remember seeing years back a suitable motor but have lost the details. Can anyone point me in the right direction to purchase an easy too fit external motor. Here in the uk. Thanks.

Do you mean something like these (see pic). My main concern would be drag. I would be inclined to place it somewhere next to (in line fore/aft) with the keel fin if you have one. Otherwise it may affect the balance of lee/weather helm handling. I don't know but I would experiment placement, before I tried to wire one in.

Crikey, those Playmobil motors haven't changed since I was a kid! I had a QE2 with the fitting on the bottom of the hull and a speed boat that took three of them. And they came with suction cups so you could use them with any boat with a flat bottom.
