1/24th Fairmile D MTB GRP hull?
« on: June 18, 2021, 02:01:00 pm »

Hi all,
After many years of waiting to see if I could buy a 1/24th scale Fairmile MTB with no success, one of our club members who needs a new project has offered to build one for me. Needless to say I am eternally grateful to him for volunteering. I'm now doing the research on the various kit vs scratch build options to try and help if I can.
So to the question: are there any suppliers that make or supply the MTB scalloped hull like MTB 736 in GRP? I see from older forums that Kingston Mouldings used to but alas as we all know they are no longer.
I've contacted another supplier for the fittings kit. Just waiting on an answer back.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Hello
A couple of pictures of my recently completed Deans "Dog Boat"... 1/24 scale and 57 inches long but not too heavy when ballasted. Built in six weeks of Lockdown .

Hi Terry,
Many thanks for posting the pictures. A lovely model and built so quickly. It's a real credit to your skills.
I've seen a few of these at shows and yours would grace any stand. Top job. :-))

Thanks for the compliments.... the kit was pretty straight forward but did require some reworking of certain fittings and a bit of head scratching.
I was very lucky in that I bought it for less than half manufacturers cost from a seller on e-bay who , when opening the box , found it somewhat daunting. Having said that I believe most Deans kits are exceptional.

I thought that MB Hulls made the hull you are looking for, but he has had to close u shop for the time being due to family issues. Hopefully he will be able to start up again soon.

Akira, gra2,

Many thanks for the information.Apologies for the late response, I've been modifying a transmitter for a club member.
Really lovely looking launch gra2, that's definitely the hull that I'm after. A real shame MTB hulls are not available at the moment?
I've been watching a YouTube video on joining MTB hulls. They look well made and good quality. I've tried the website but no joy, so I guess I missed the boat, sorry for the pun

I'll keep searching to see if I can find one.

Thanks again for your help chaps.

Hi Mountfleet,
That's great. From the picture it looks like the right hull with the scallops for the forward torpedo tubes. I've checked your website and it isn't in the current range of hulls you offer. Should I send you and email to discuss pricing?

Many thanks.

Hi ether823,
I actually bought the hull and plans from Mountfleet, but it was not 1/24th scale. We worked out the scale to be approximately 1/29th, which was really strange? The plans were for a 1/32nd scale model. Their hull was 10" shorter than it should have been for a full size Fairmile. We ended up buying the Deans hull and adding the scallops. I was not the builder, that was kindly done by another club member and he made a wonderful job. We used the Battlecrafts full fittings kit for the build.

Let me know if you need any further info.

Martin L.

Thanks Martin, I was thinking of building a 1/24 scale MTB and the only hull out there seems to be the Deans one. There is a shortage of coastal forces hulls since Christian ceased trading. Mountfleet only seem to produce a Denny steam gunboat. Peter
