The London Titan by Macduff Ship Design
« on: June 21, 2021, 02:54:48 pm »

My first full scratch build with the help of Macduff.
I want to build this in 1:32 scale as close a resemblance as possible. The hull will be plywood with a glass overcoat and be a one off.
The deck will be paxolin and the superstructure from styrene sheet, all tried and tested on my Stevn's Arctic. At this scale she will be 1141mm in length by 422mm breadth.
No drawing data/plans supplied to me by Macduff can be shared so please don't ask. I won't be making a plug and this will be a unique one off.
I may even do working lighting this time now that I've mastered windows  {-)

Initially my thoughts are to use 3 overlander 2836 brushless motors driving 3 x 45mm 3 blade props through sealed prop shafts (expensive  🙈) I'm not sure yet if all three props are right handed (unlikely) I cannot find a clear picture. A 24mm brass bow thruster will be imported from hobbylobby (also expensive 🙈🙈)

That's a tad different and I for one will love to watch you build this one.

That is an unusual ship. The underwater shape is rather strange!
What is the Port of London expecting to use this ship for? The 30ton bollard pull + 120ton winch + two deck cranes + fore and aft rollers suggest a rather wide range of activity.

Colin

Nice link thank you. It certainly has a broad spectrum of use.

Perhaps I should have asked what are they not going to use it for!

That looks like a really interesting build, and being a soft Southerner, I'll keep an eye out for her next time I am in London, on the river.

Yes, it looks like a maritime Swiss Army Knife.

Thanks for your interest everyone  :-)
As a matter of course I will be editing main blog posts for as long as the opportunity is there.
This is to keep information condensed as much as possible for the benefit of those reading rather than fragmented.
Further information has been added to the OP this morning :-))

Sorry that the U tube links don't have preview images, only admin have the ability to do that.

Thank you both.
Ian sent me files today but I need to get them printed as I can't possibly work from a pc screen.
My problem to deal with is getting them to 1:32 and I'm not familiar with doing this.
The general arrangement drawing is excellent but it's scaled at 1:75 1:1 printed at A0
The CAD files again are a dilemma for me but I will get there eventually.
One thing I have realised quite quickly is that I will not need many of the frames of which there are about 70 spaced at 500mm intervals. These are for strength that I don't need on a scale model, I only need enough to form the correct shape skin. On my model the frames would be approx 16mm apart and with 5mm ply that would be folly so it's a case of exercising common sense.
Hull lines plan is 1:50 1:1 printed at A1
Ian does not have details of the props but he agrees with me that the port side will be LH and the others RH.

Meantime I'm continuing the Mercantic planking. :-)

This is by no means an easy build and it may be stretched over a couple of years.
Today I'm stocking up on the running gear in case of difficulties finding parts in future.
A trip to model shop Leeds will sort the motors and ESC's (cheapest in UK atm)
I'm communicating with Gerda at Hobby Lobby Modellbau about how purchasing works post Brexit with his shop. There is simply no one else that stocks the bow thruster and I don't want to use Raboesch for this because I don't feel their design is good enough for their price.

This has twin 24mm props

I visited a printers in Leeds yesterday. They can make the pdf files 1:32 if I give them a reference point and a specific dimension for it at 1:32. Hopefully I will have a result on Monday.
I already have plenty of wood in stock  O0

1/50 to 1/32 enlarge/multiply by 156.25%.
My son has made me a simple app that can converts scales and measurements. It works a treat.
PM me if you'd like a copy.
