Microsoft Windows 11 !!
« on: June 26, 2021, 12:35:42 am »

I thought W10 was going to be the last OS system from MS, But have just read that they are intending after 6 years of W10 to release W11 !!.  But not all Pc's will be able to run it.

I think it was kind of inevitable. There has been a quantum leap in the home and office computing environments in the last few years. Covid has changed how many people work, shop, and live our homelives.
Many of the changes driven by 5G, and there are also potential future services made possible by 5G. Microsoft will have been following the projections we have yet no idea about.
But sticking to the current services:
AMD Ryzen processors are faster than Intel, and work more efficiently, cooler and use less energy. This will make laptops more suitable for the newer bigger games that are coming along.
More people and companies are using cloud based services.
More people are using Zoom type multi-person video conferencing.
More use of mobile apps that people want to link to their computers.
More bigger game streaming.
More video streaming.
More 4k and even 8k video coming along.
Maybe VR service streaming.
More cable tv to computer.
More multi-screen use.
More online shopping, and home delivery; and yes some people will want to follow their pizza every 50 meters and get frustrated when it is stuck at traffic lights.
And the list goes on.
Some of these services above will need an OS that can handle very broad band input. Maybe Win10 really is not up to it.
The updates needed to Win 10, if possible, might just be too big for a lot of the world's telecomms network. A new OS would be the solution.

There are also those of us who find Win10 more than adequate. Last time Windows produced a new OS for the 'new' environment was Win8, and what a disaster that was. Maybe by they don't want to break Win10 before Win11 is working.

Six months ago I built a high spec PC using the latest hardware and it fails the Windows 11 compatibility test....  https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-11#pchealthcheck
I doubt many PCs will meet it's hardwear security requirements for TMP 2.0, many boards won't even accept a Module to overcome the issue.

One major problem seems to be whether or not you have Legacy Bios or UEFI. No idea if or how you can change from legacy BIOS to UEFI.

I recently had a shuffle round after my elderly netbook died.  The laptop that has been my workhorse for a few years now sits where the netbook habitually sat, and has been replaced by a refurbished tower at what seemed a sensible price.  Modern and powerful enough to run Zoom with a pretend background.  This has just been tested and has failed because it doesn't support "secure boot", seemingly a core requirement.
Will I be rushing out to grab a new PC?  No.  That can wait until 2025, when W10 will be 10 years old and pensioned off by M$.  By then there will likely be refurbed W11 PCs on the market.

My fairly recent Dell tower is apparently OK. Not tried the much older laptop yet.

According to Mr Gates self test, test %) , this [my upstairs machine] is compatible for a FREE upgrade to Win11 when it rolls  {-)  out........

Do they think I am mad.......Compatability?@#  >>:-(

I have a Microsoft 2 machine yearly contract for the $99.00 MS 365 Office package, which  I consider as good value considering the options

Having said this, not sure I would be in the first 1,000,000 or so to accept it  :-))

As I understand it you can't change it as it is a motherboard issue. I believe that anything Windows 7 or later is likely to have UEFI.

If previous version patterns are anything to go by it will be rubbish...

Win 10 ok
Win 8 awful
win 7 good
Win Vista awful
XP Brilliant
Win 2000 awful

Win 2000 was a business O.S., it was rock solid for servers etc.

Don't forget Windows ME (Mistake Edition)
Thankfully I was on 98SE, and missed all the new stuff until XP appeared.  Not having a machine eligible for 11 might be a blessing.

Is yours 32 or 64 Bit . Apparently they need to be 64 , mine is only 32 so not compatible.

Shy isn't a 2 month ols Mesh computer compatible?  When I looked at the requirement spec I though it very basic.

Have they even sold 32 bit computers in the last 10 years?

My 2 year old H P laptop isn't compatible, the processor isn't on their list. Strangely, my 3 year old self build, cobbled together from all sorts of oddments is fine. I'm struggling to understand any consistency in the specs.

Win 10 'update' wiped me out a year or three back , I was on Win 7pro and , un-commanded , deleted all my passwords, and two years of photos , I'd been lax in backing up to an external hard drive , a lesson well learned .
I'm on LINUX now, a steep learning curve but a lot of apps are open source and free here , don't dual boot LINUX/WINDOWS , Gates has a hidden spike in the windows boot up that makes them incompatible after a while , I run Win 7 pro on a separate hard drive with LINUX on an SSD , so I just unplug the SSD and plug the hard drive with windows on it back in , disconnecting the router to prevent microsoft interference ( they spiked Win 7 two christmases back , but I was in the clear, a lot of folks screens went blank ) microsoft are starting to look like modern day gangsters . . . To quote them " Windows 10 will be the last ever change of operating system , we'll just update as WE NEED " ? ?

The requirements for most of the hardware are quite basic by todays standards, but tucked away in the small print is the requirement that the mother board has the ability to "secure boot".  This might change come roll-out time.  I'm not intending to do any unnecessary replacing anytime soon, I expect that much of the rest of the world shares that opinion.
As to data loss at changeover or any other time, nobody should ever use the program defaults for storage.  They are designed to encourage laziness and be the cause of future grief.  And to make life easier for hackers.  Invest in, and use, a separate drive.  System back-ups can live there as well.  That is something that users have the ability to do, as opposed to my android phone - when that stores anything, it's anybody's guess where it might hide it.

A quote from Long Build's original link -
So far Microsoft have released the hardware requirements for Windows 11, but there's confusion over TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and whether the company are pushing hard over the minimum threshold for which devices are eligible to be updated to the new version.
So devices that are ineligible at the moment might suddenly become eligible, much as with W10, when display requirements changed and my late departed netbook became OK for update.
From M$'s past record, the requirements will be for what you need to install - to actually run it you will need about twice as much.  HD space, memory and speed, and, these days, CPU cores.

Looking around, found this - https://www.majorgeeks.com/content/page/this_pc_cant_run_windows_11.html
It looks like modern PCs that say they can't convert may need to have some settings re-arranged in their BIOS/UEFI.  The big problem outlined with that is that every single manufacturer call the same functions by different names making it impossible to create a general guide.  Add to that the chance that inserting a wrong setting can leave you with a big paperweight rather than a PC.
Hopefully somebody from the sensible team at MS (XP,7,8.1,10)will look in and tell the radicle lot (ME, Vista, 8) how to do it properly.
