the props are handed i took them off for painting and quickly put them on afterwards.
i need to take them back off again so never checked the orientation and just crossed them over but they
are a handed pair

You must also admit I have a pretty good eye for detail    ....when picking out that Carrier at the Blackpool Show and recognising similarities with your vessel

Maybe this picture helps in detailling the island and bridge. The picture is from HMAS Sydney (basically a Majestic class, but the island shape is the same). If you want more pictures, I just have a small selection of HMAS Vengeance and HMAS Sydney pictures in high-res. Just mail me directly.

The Dutch National Archives have a lot of drawings of the (reconstructed) HNLMS Karel Doorman, some of them might still be useful. https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/archief/4.MST (Google translate is your friend, look for drawings nr. 3190-3233).

The website has been super for information on the boat decks and other hull areas since they were the same.
Glory being a colossus class had a different superstructure layout than the Majestic class.
The majestic class had an enclosed bridge and a much smaller bridge gallery.
In the original colossus class the bridge gallery was wrapped around the superstructure and the top deck was open until the 1950s, glory only had hers closed in on the way to Korea before that it had a canvas cover over the bridge.

Good to read that the website is helpful,Here is a picture of the bridge of HMAS Vengeance with some people, including my F-i-L in the way ;-). HMAS Vengeance was indeed a Colossus class and even one of the longest surviving vessels of the class.

HMS Venerable was sold the the Netherlands and served as 'HNLMS Karel Doorman'. The Dutch archives have an impressive set of downloadable plans of her as mentioned above  .

Yes Venerable was sold to the Dutch who later sold her to the Argentinians and she became their flagship 25 de mayo.

Indeed, the interesting part is that HMS Leviathan provided new machinery for HMS Karel Doorman , prior to her sale to Argentina. HMS Eviathan was scrapped shortly after.

They increased the power in the engines but the length of the starboard shaft had some significant vibration issues
So they fitted a 4 bladed prop which then allowed for lower revs for the same output.


When I get home I will share a picture of one in dry dock it’s definitely weird.

A picture of HMAS Sydney, Majestic Class, started life as HMS Terrible, the only Aircraft Carrier built at Devonport Royal Naval Dockyard.
I have read that the issues with excessive vibration were because the Starboard shaft-line in both classes was longer than the Port side, due to the staggered main machinery arrangement and the RN's preference of using 3-bladed propellers. This enabled high shaft RPM.
The issue came to a head when HMS Pioneer (Colossus Class), conducting yard sea trials, suffered a catastrophic Starboard shaft failure, resulting in substantial damage in one of the machinery spaces. The solution, as you have stated above Gingyer, was to fit 4-bladed propellers to this shaft so the rpm could be reduced whilst maintaining required power/thrust.

I have NEVER seen that before. How interesting. I wonder if any other ships dealt with shaft vibration in such a manner. I am aware that props were often changed to address the issue, but, at least in USN, it was done on both port and starboard at the same time. The South Dakota class battleships ran different props, four blade on the inboard shafts, I believe, and five blade on the outboard.*(Maybe the other way around, not enough coffee yet).

I have seen drawings of the Australian carriers and they showed Bofors fitted there.

You are correct Gingyer. Certainly during her time off Korea and later as a Vietnam War troop transport, HMAS Sydney had 40mm Bofors mounts fitted in those locations. Mainly to counter hostile surface-craft, given the poor arcs of fire which would severely limit usefulness against aircraft.
