Which 37' Rother was stationed in Ireland?
« on: February 02, 2023, 09:07:46 pm »

I understand that at least 137 foot Rother was stationed in Ireland. If you know the name of the boat and where it was stationed, can you please let me know. Thank you.

Hi Tim,
According to the Lifeboat Handbook there were 14 Rother Lifeboats built between
1972-1982  Op numbers 13-27 to 13-40 none of them seem to be stationed in Ireland,
or as a relief boat.

                            Bryan.

Thank you Bryon. I too think that is the case but I've seen one or two sites where they make the comment that Rother were in England and Ireland which is what's causing my confusion. I've sent a note to the RNLI heritage department, but have not heard back yet. If I find anything out more, I will post it. Thank you again.

Just thinking at a tangent.

The Rother was based on the 37' Oakley class lifeboat. Three of these 37' Oakley were stationed at Clogher Head.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the Rothers made it to Ireland. Interesting, the numbering of the Rothers started from 37-27 as the Rother was a further development of the Oakley - one aspect was apparently getting rid of the complicated water ballasted self-righting system.

A number of the 37' Oakley's were stationed at Ireland but only at 3 stations - Clogherhead, Newcastle and Kilmore Quay. I know that our own station had the Jane Hay (Main boat) and the J.G Graves of Sheffield (Relief Boat). Each of the stations over a period of time had different relief boats prior to getting their Mersey.

Slightly off topic - Interesting, we (Newcastle) got Clogherhead Mersey which was due to be 12-29 - apparently due to their boat boathouse not being ready in time and they got our Mersey 12-31.

12-29 went off station for the final time and we got 12-30 (Her Majesty the Queen) as a relief. One of our coxswains in down in Malahide today doing sea trials on 12-30  and apparently it's heading to the RNLI Museum  :-))
