Needle files
« on: July 24, 2021, 09:15:21 pm »

Hi All

Can anyone recommend a set of needle files that they have/use that they are happy with please.
I have tried a few of the cheaper sets but not surprisingly the round file are not that round or the square ones are not square and so on .
Thanks

Hi Tim
Sad fact is you can pay over £10 per file or £10 for a whole set but they all wear out or with solder they clog up.
I'm always looking for clearance or old stock Vallorbe.

Practically disposable at this price

I have an excellent set by Craftsman.  And as to files clogging up, that's what wire brushes are for.

I have a set  from Perma Grit (https://www.permagrit.com/riffler-and-needle-files/) I have had them for coming on 30 years now, good for the rough work but to heavy for the fine work.

A file is for metal ,a rasp is for wood ,that was what I was told when serving my time (no not in the jail). a file test to see if it is good is to press a 2bob bit(or metric equivalent) on to the file and hold the file vertical if it sticks there keep file if it falls off file is blunt . Another trick was to rub the file with a stick of welders  French chalk this filled the root of the teeth and stopped it clogging up ,never sure about that one .

Another trick?.............no David, not at least according to our Technical Teachers 55+ years ago

The Welders [French] chalk does help inhibit metals clogging to the root or valley of the file serrations :-)) ...and only use a brass wire brush for cleaning

Another recommendation was to have files for brass separated from, or a second set of your files for ferrous metals

Who could afford a second set of Wiltshire 2nd Grade "illigitimate" files? >>:-( ...not me

I use Vallorbe files and they are very good indeed.  Its the type of file that jewellers use and they also make a very nice handle for them too which locks on via a collet system

Hi All
Thank you for your replies, in my post I should have said that it is to mail you file plastic card and abit of brass now and again. I will try the French chalk suggestion
I have had a quick look on the expo website Stan  definitely worth a phone call this week cheers
Hi Andy , at  over £10 a file is a little abit  extravagant  for what I need them for  lol
I like to believe that you get what you pay for but I'm not always sure that we do  , as some items are just re-badged  and cost more .
CGAUX 26 the craftsman  products  are hard to find in the uk unfortunately , they look pretty good quality
Thanks again

Still on track  :-))  ...I see one of our kind  Moderators has changed the spelling of that 2nd Grade file........that I had posted earlier

Wiltshire 2nd Grade "illigitimate" files?

The correct terminology was 2nd Cut, followed by the Term of "Fatherless"........file.... yes, the Wiltshire file WEB site will confirm that I was not using an inappropriate word or profanity. :P ....no, no......no, but the Manufacturers Trade name  O0

Is that the same as a Barstard file?  :embarrassed:

one explanation for the term is that in the early 14th century, the Duke of Northumberland would abuse tenants of his farms, who were late paying, by torturing their wives.

During this time, he invented a number of tools to help him enforce his punishment for late payment, with one of those tools being commonly known as the "Barstard "illigitimate" file.

The Duke’s reputation spread far and wide, it even reached London and the king’s ear. Henry V had just returned from his jaunt in France and fresh from his celebrated battle of Agincourt and wanted to re-exert his influence over the dukes and earls in court.

He called for the Duke of Northumberland, ridiculed him in front of his peers and used the now commonly known "Barstard" file to remove the tip of the Duke’s nose.

The auto correct in the system changes the word to illigitimate!!!!!!!

For a second I thought the moderated word was Wiltshire, but it was used again without being moderated  %)

best bet I have found is old sets picked up on ebay or at boot fairs, way better than even the same brand modern ones.
