Type 22 deck fittings
« on: February 16, 2024, 09:54:42 am »

Hi Nige.
Thanks for the info on the TARM boards, so interesting.
As a guru on type 22's, I have another question for you, on the batch one's such as Brilliant there is a aerial location point at deck level behind the mainmast against the forward hanger bulkhead. The fitting is protected by guardrails, In my drawing of Brilliant the side elevations do not correspond with the plan view and anyway I cannot see what the fitting is, any ideas please?

Thanks in anticipation

Hi Alan,
I have the info that will hopefully answer your query about the equipment on 01 Deck Fwd of the Hangar. You sure are going into detail on your Model, which is very pleasing. I'll write up a reply today.
Can I humbly suggest that you just add any further questions to this new thread, as opposed to starting fresh ones. Might be better to keep all the T22 info in one place........entirely up to you of course.

Hi Alan,
I don't think the title of Guru is in any way an accurate description of me, I'm sure others on this Forum are far more deserving. I did, however, during my over 20yrs at Devonport Royal Naval Dockyard, work on thirteen of the fourteen T22's. The exception being Cumberland. So it would be very slack if I had not been able to retain in my memory some of the things I saw, noting that everything related below is old 'Open-Source' information. You just need to know where to look.

OK, so I had a trawl through some drawings and images I have to find a reasonable answer to your query. I also drew from the extensive knowledge of my Mate in the UK who is an ex-RN 'Greenie' who specialised in Radar. I by contrast was a Fitter and Turner by trade.
So the piece of kit is apparently a 'Pre-Amplifier' (PA)/Tuner for one of the Comms Radio Antennas, in this case, most likely the HF (High-Frequency) set.
(Don't expect me to explain a fraction of how it works.....I'm still amazed by Television :D )

The same equipment was to be found on the County Class, HMS Bristol, the T21's and T42's. I suspect that it was possibly on the T81's, T12's and Leanders, although I have not checked. The only variation I have seen is that the unit on the T21's was mounted on it's end, as it were, atop a framework. Probably to keep it at arms length given its congested location on that Class.

With the saying in mind, "A picture speaks a thousand words", see the images below, noting the following:
  • The Builders drawings are in some cases, preliminary, so some details may differ from the 'as built' end result.
  • The image of Brilliant shows her undergoing some maintenance at Devonport. In this case, the Aft MacGregor hatch is raised which provided a very convenient shipping route down to the AAMR (Aft Auxiliary Machinery Room), there are two identical hatches in the decks below this one on 01 Deck. Big enough to remove an Engine from the Paxman Ventura Diesel Gensets, here we see one of the three HP Air Compressors being removed. You will note that the half-round guard-rail around the PA overlapped the hatch and so was removable.
  • An overhead view of Cumberland.
  • An image of a model of Cornwall built by the incredibly talented and renowned Cornish Model-Builder David Brown.
  • An image of Arrow.
  • An image of David Browns Active.
The next post will show two very useful images of the two units on Bristol as I've hit the Forum limit for individual post images.

Two images of HMS Bristol showing the equipment in question,
I hope that helps Alan.

Hi Nige,
Wow, that's really great information, thanks so much, I will certainly be able to make that fitting now. Also all credit to David Brown's model, I particularly like the plating ripple effect. This forum has been so useful and I thank you for using up your allowance on me, I have many books about warships but there is always that little question that needs answering that I cannot find.
 Kind regards
 Alan.....

Thanks for confirming Bob. I wonder if they were on Type 41/61 as well?

Alan, you are very welcome, it's all beneficial for me for when I eventually build Broadsword 1/72, so don't hesitate to ask if you have more queries moving forward. I have my hull as an incentive, it's just time constraints that are the eternal problem. Too busy builďing 1:1 Scale Ships.
 :((
May I ask if you are doing Brilliant as she was to any specific time period or date? My main focus is RN during Op Corporate 1982.
Also, whilst the Jecobin plans are very good overall (I have about a dozen or so myself and recommend them), there are some glaring mistakes, especially below the waterline. That is certainly not a criticism of the very talented Mr Hitch, who even goes so far as to say essentially that on his plans, the lack of open-source hull and drive-line detail being the issue when he drew them up. Not much better now, to be honest.
Roll-Fin/Stabiliser and Bilge Keels to name just two, quite wrong on the Jecobin plans.

Hi Nige and Bob,
Thanks for your continued support. I am building Brilliant as she was in the Jecobin drawings generally so that's 1981? Also finding info on the internet and using this excellent forum. I have the modern combat ships book on the Type 22 which has some nice pictures of Brilliant in it but from a later period I believe. Another source has been the tv series on Brilliant.
Thank you again for everything
