Dave......whilst I had no involvement with the FFG's propulsion, I understood each of the basic GE LM2500 gas turbines were capable of being removed in a modular box via a set of 90 degree rails to be lifted out vertically just FWD of the 76mm Gun mount

[similar to the concept removing 1/2 a dozen M16 bolts to remove a VW engine O0

I have sketched a mockup of this as below for the FFG.....but my real question is how did they maintain this simplicity of removal in the Arleigh Bourke Class, as they have 4 x GE LM2500 gas turbines?

I'll post this here & if you can, maybe respond in the AB link

Hi Derek,

I believe the FFG engine removal hatch’s were between the gun mount and the funnel. As for the bolts,  the engine may have had half a dozen, but the hatch’s had a lot more  {-)

With our RAN FFG's, just as their US designers plan, the service changeout of an GE2500 LM gas turbine was a planned time based event

Being a 48-hour? event, planned changeouts were achieved during limited outages during a normal Service Period
[a planned outage is an event when a vessel is not expected to be able to present for duty]

[this was an intentional design aspect so not to have two major mechanical events occurring in close proximity]

I had the priviladge of supervising the first planned [12 day] removal and changeout of the 76mm Otto Gunmount [during a Docking]

So I knew the turbine was lifted out in a box on rails, but obviously was not interested from which hatch

Despite the DANGER signs, I was more than a little concerned that the Dockyard workers  >>:-( didn't walk over the 15ft diameter domed wooden + canvas disk covering the hole in the deck  <:(  and letting rain water into the magazine spaces

So where are these hatches on the AB Destroyers?

Derek

Hi Derek,

I’ve posted an answer to the AB question on the AB thread :-))

I did read some so where about RN changed a type 42 engine at sea. Don’t know if this is correct but if it was I hope the sea was flat as moving and engine in rough sea would not be good.

This image is RAN 01 HMAS Adelaide.........the two gas turbine vertical engine removal hatches are clearly shown

The years must be fading %)  I must have walked past these two hatches [or the same], hundreds of times, but I don't remember them being there :embarrassed:

Derek,

Funny you should say that, when we have had at shows crews from the ships I’ve modelled and ask them questions they can’t remember things that as modeller we notice. %)

Hello and Happy New Year to MBM.

I’m Restarting this build which I put to one side, as I’d start on my Type 26. However as details for this ship at this time are in short supply, so I’ve park it.

This project of an Oliver Hazard Peary FFG (USS Antrim) was put in storage, but it has taken some damage which I’ll need to put right before I continue with the build.

Well, repaired the damage and just finished tidying up the wires.

Next will be to clean up the deck paint work, then I’ll start on detailing the superstructure.

Flag lockers. Just have to decide to whether to have the lockers with the canvas covers or open showing stored flags.

Those manifolds look good to me David - are the handwheels made with PE ? (just curious)  %)
