1/96 scale Oliver Hazard Perry Frigate
« on: July 25, 2021, 09:24:17 pm »

Well gents whilst still awaiting PE handrails for my Arleigh Burke I resurrected a 25 year old project of a Oliver Hazard Perry model. This project got put into storage as the scratch built hull was not as good as I could build.
So over the last four weeks I’ve sanded, filled, sanded filled primed sanded etc the hull and it’s turned out not bad. So until the handrail arrive I’ll be working on this project. The plan I have is from TS Design, but after studying it, it has a few errors so a bit of web trawling is needed.

I guess it's always good to have something else to work on during waiting bouts - must try that myself sometime  :-)

Will the rest of this build be on this blog Dave?

HI  Dave  a nice build there but i must admit that i  find  that this is a weid design of ship
[size=0px] Oliver Hazard Perry class as too me  as its got just one prop an the rudder is off set an got a very low funnel but i suppose there is less to get hit in a shooting war but i will follow your build as you are a very good moddeler but please fininsh your burke as i really like that ship an i have got over i think of my tiger motor probs thank goodness thanks to Bob [/size]

Hi Chris,

Good to hear your making progress with Tigers motors, what did you do in the end ?

As for this build I didn’t want to buy a new hull for my next project as I have several in stock and the boss is asking question about why I need so many.

Yes these are very odd ships, but some of the ship the UNS disposed of years ago are still going with other navy’s . I assume the off set rudder was to counter the torque the large prop would be giving. But happy to be corrected  if some knows better?

Yes I will finish USS Roosevelt once I get the PE handrails, I have several things to complete on her but can’t until I get the PE set

Master Rudder and hull stabilisers ready for moulding.

The stabilisers are some of the casting made 25years ago, however the mould was showing its age and was beyond saving.

It may seem I rushing this but I’m expecting in the next few weeks to have and operation on my elbow, so try to get some modelling do before I’m incapacitated for a time.

HI Dave well some may take a dim view of what ive done but with Bob's help
(Rob 47)  ive done away with the becc system i think as ive disconnected both
red wires to both ESC 'S an fitted a small 6v batt pack to the R/X  an i had a dogey main switch an ive replaced that allso an now ive had all 4 motors running at about half throttle yesterday an they seem to run all ok an no cut outs so now today im now gonna wire it all in properly
an i herd that the  rudder is off set on your model like on the real ship so that it can take a tighter turn as well as what you have said

Had some gaps in weather an manage over the last few day to paint the hull and do the flight deck tie downs and some of the white lines.

Thanks Chris,

Progress so far on the superstructure, I’m lucky that a lot of fittings I’ve made for the Arleigh Burke can be used on this build, so saving build time.

Looking good Dave and it's handy to have your own castings to augment these (and possibly other) models that you want to build. Nice one  :-))

Very good  :-))  ...what is your plan for the black deformed egg shaped Sonar dome?

Many years ago [when we were at War with someone in the Middle East], I spent the dusk to dawn supervision shift of a few electronic Techanicians making emergency repairs to the Sonar System of an RAN Oliver Hazard FFG in our Garden Island Graving Dock

These people were in the Dome......[playing +/- on Quartz Lego type Blocks], I was listening [electronically] on the Dock floor for 12 hours
My greatest concern were the Graving Dock Floor, night time Rats  >>:-( ....yes as large as Cats <*<

I believe the easiest way to rid of the rats is when you find the hole they come out of, providing it does not connect to where it cannot be evacuted from when needed, is to pump nitrogen down, this removes the oxygen and either they exit the hole into set traps or die in situe, the problem is if the hole leads to somewhere the gas settles and is hard to remove for maintaining the equipment at that location.
